Can't rule out Benitez trying to sell him for Barry. Alonso's last two season before 08/09 were pretty injury-plagued and I don't think he played very well. Last season was his best in a Liverpool shirt though, and I guess he thinks enough is enough and wants to move onto a bigger challenge. Best of luck to him.

i agree with dan. you are spot on lad its a pity there arent more people like you on here who know what their talking about his last season was his best in a lfc shirt, and rafa didnt help with the barry saga, but you have to respect alonso and all he done for lfc and rafa at the end of the day hes spanish and one of the top two spanish teams came in for him and we recieved a very good fee GOOD LUCK XABI AND I HOPE TO SEE YOU AT ANFIELD ONE MORE TIME POSSIBLY IN A REAL SHIRT IN CHANPIONS LEAGUE, JUST SO I CAN CHANT YOUR NAME 1 MORE TIME
