Is Rio Ferdinand really right man to lead the England national team? Can he guide the country to World Cup glory?

Being Welsh, I'm not really bothered but in my opinion Gerrard should be Captain.

It's ok Keith, nobody's perfect ;-) I am just trying to figure out what exactly Rio brings to the fold by being Captain

Yes, of course. I knew people will critics this because they are Manchester United/Rio haters.

I'm a Man U hater too but not a Rio hater. But he doesn't seem to have the strength of character of Terry or Gerrard. For me it should be Gerrard, but since Cappello picked Rio as vice captain already, I suppose he had to now pick him as captain or it would cause even more problems in the team.

This is a good question, Dan, and remains to be seen. My two bit in this matter is that the man has not earned it but was given the armband because of an unfortunate and sad day for English football. At this point of the campaign, he or any other assigned captain is mo more than a proxy. It's not fair to Rio as I personally see the man has been set up to fail.

Gerrard all the way, or even Lampard. Rio does not inspire...

Being Scottish I don't really care who is and Rio as captian will only be bad for you English and good for us scott :D But personally Steven Gerrard would be the better choice for a few reasons. 1) his Recored planning for England is outstanding 2) Look what he brings as Liverpool Captain 3) He leads an example for the rest of the team when he plays and 4) Rio is nothing tbh, over rated player. Gerrard should of been made captain and not Terry in the first place.

The captain does not really need to guide the team to World Cup glory. Every player knows their role and are inspired enough in any case since this is the World Cup. Besides Capello is there for tactical planning, which the captain does not need to get involved in. The Captain is pretty much to talk to media, so whoever can do that well can become the country captain. Capello did not want disharmony and akwardness in the camp with Bridge being in the team as backup to Ashley Cole, so he had to remove him and he just promoted the No. 2. Really doesn't matter who is captain, except that he gets to lift the cup, provided they win it.

No England captain has lifted the trophy for 44 years, but Rio can, look what he's done for Man Utd

@Dean - got no choice but to completely agree with everything you wrote....everything! @Akhil - I don't agree that the Captain doesn't really need to guide the team. Victory does not begin and end with a team's captain, but he can have a major impact on the team's morale and performance, and therefore result.

according to me i do have belief in rio as a club hater i obviously despise the idea of his captaincy ..but some where capello decided to leave it on him so that gerrard can concentrate more on the game and do what he does best and let the old rio be stuck back and do a little captaincy ...if you ask me terry should not have been stripped of his captaincy for personal issues ......why bring in social life with soccer sounds ridiculous to me atleast ...damn tell me how many would not have dated more the two women at a time ..this is just bull shit ...and yea its a drop for gerrard s image
10.02.2010 21:31
I dont believe Rio is strong enough to lead the England team, always looks like a follower/hider to me. Terry should not have been stripped of the captaincy, but at least he wasnt kicked out of the squad as well, we will need his toughness when things get going.Mind you, Rio will probably be injured when the World Cup comes around, so who will we turn to then? Gerrard? Lampard? or will we go back to JT?

Haha, would be hilarious if it came back to JT...and then he led England to glory. But can't see that happening. @dan_devils - it's a little bit different when the personal issues involve your team mates...
11.02.2010 15:33
@dan k...tell me one thing no not to mock at you but seriously ..just answer this out of innocence and curiosity am asking you have nt you been through the age where u know a gal you dating some time back is some body else s for a moment ...and does that seriously stop you from being a part of that class ...or ok sounds stupid let me put it a in a more simple way .....stripping JT of his captaincy will the by gones change or the present gonna change ..he might still be going out ...its his life ..he lives it just the way everybody else does .....yea it is pretty unfortunate that this happened to his team mate ...but stripping captaincy does no good but harm ............duh...sorry if i over spoke

Its about the effect on the England team, otherwise we don't care who Terry is shagging this week. Question is whether stripping him of the captaincy really helps the team and means Bridge is happy now. I wouldn't think so...
11.02.2010 16:39
Fabio is crazy and foolish man how did he strip terry of his captaincy rio is most jealous and astonished man in the world how did he handle england national team???? terry is the most brilliant and legendry man in the world of sporteveryone respect him
12.02.2010 18:17
@seagul68 ..you stole my words ..bravo
12.02.2010 18:41
@alisha fabio did not get right by stripping Jt s captaincy ..but i know that he did not give lamp or SG coz he dint want them to be diverted from their game ........rio cant do anything without consulting Sg or Fl.........i hope so ......
17.02.2010 12:15
yes i know that but u tell me is rio is right man to led england because he is so greedy person he is not like terry who is a legendry and excellent player
19.02.2010 06:33
Alisha - Totally agree with you that Rio definitely wasn't the correct decision when you look at his past behavior, especially not showing up for Drug testing some time back, and this is pretty much a sporting misbehavior compared to Terry's behavior which has nothing to do with football. Are you from India?
Por  Seagull68
19.02.2010 11:59
The decision was made months ago when Rio was named as 2nd in command. To have done anything else would have caused more upset in the team - especially in the back four!!
19.02.2010 13:18
yes akhil i am from india and u?
19.02.2010 17:09
I'm from india too....from delhi...but ive moved to indonesia now...what city do you live in ? it shows your profile as private and thats why i cant send a friend request...
20.02.2010 02:48
i am from rajasthan i.e. in Ajmer city
20.02.2010 09:09
oh wow.... my ancestors are from rajasthan....some village close to bikaner i think....so how do i add you on footbo ?
21.02.2010 19:06
he is just given the position ...but the work will be somebody elses ..it cant be him ...may be lampard or gerrard...and yea to your notice alisha ..you dont need to be a legend to lead a team ....only a captain and the qualities of a leader not that of a legend ....every leader can be a legend ....but not every leader is a legend...no offense ..i am in complete consent with your views that rio does not fit to take the post of a captain.....but there is no one else who can take it either ................all need to work on the game in order for uk to win thay cant give it away ..so they made rio as the captain ...and let the rest concentrate on their game ...which i suppose is a wise choice by capello......
23.02.2010 02:50
ok but tell me is terry is better or rio?
Por  dank
25.02.2010 07:25
in my opinion, yes he is. but the player's playing level doesn't determine anything. terry is better than Rio, but has lost the right to lead the national team. that he is also a better leader than Ferdinand is kinda irrelevant. he blew it... @dan_devils - i don't agree that no else who can do it...i think Capello has enough players to choose from...but i do take the point made by @Seagul68 that as Rio was already named as vice-captain, he couldn't choose anyone else for the job without causing an even bigger mess.

hi dan k it is your photo in the blog or anyone else

25.02.2010 16:43
@Alisha - it's me
26.02.2010 05:36
@dank ..i said no one else can do it coz ...they need to work on their game and leave the extra pressure of captaincy ..to rio ..who does not have much of work on the field when compared to the rest.............
26.02.2010 05:37
@ alisha........................hell terry..................obviously.....duh
26.02.2010 07:41
hi dan k where do u live
