Four major clubs dominate the football scene  in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Perhaps  the Flamengo x Vasco da Gama derby is the most rivarly . Fluminense x Botafogo for sure is the oldest. Flamengo x Botafogo  also have a rich history that has been emphasizing in recent years but the most traditional classic of Brazilian football certainly remains the Fla-Flu.

The past

This rivalry began in October 1911, when a group of dissatisfied players from Fluminense left the club, and went to Flamengo, which at the time had no football section. The first game was in 1912 at Laranjeiras(Fluminense stadium) and Flu won by 3-2.
Since then the magic of this confrontation has grown beyond the football and influenced Brazilian culture in several areas.
In 1933 the journalist Mário Filho named the derby with this truncation and the term became so popular that it`s including mentioned in the Flamengo`s unofficial anthem and even in the anthem of Bangu, another club from Rio.
The world record football match attendance between clubs is a Fla 0-0 Flu with 194,603 (177,656 ps.) in 1963 at Maracanã.
The two rivals symbolically polarize the social antagonism to transform into a carnival spectacle
The big theater at its two extremes

Fla: the slum people, the nigger, the poor, the mass, the nation, party in the favela

Flu: the high society, the nobility, the rich, the playboy, the aristocracy of Rio in three colors

It is impossible to describe here the atmosphere of this game with so many stories. I personally have experienced great moments at this exciting and colorful battle. Even in the worst moments, as in 1995(year of the Fla`s centenary) when Flu won by 3-2 in the last minute and became champion. A weird goal by the belly of Renato Gaúcho decided the game for Flu which had Joel Santana  as coach. Flamengo with Romário, Branco, Sávio trained by Wanderley Luxemburgo lost the final in Maracanã with more than 120.000 crazy fans. Was sad for me but unforgettable anyway.

URUGUAYAN WRITER EDUARDO GALEANO ABOUT THE DERBY

                                                    The Present

The last FLA-FLU in April 12 was good for Flamengo, the victory by 1-0 put Mengo on Carioca´s final and now as 2009 champion  Fla beat Flu as the biggest winner of Rio de Janeiro championship, 31x30 titles.

They will meet again by the 8ºround of Brasileirão . Fla (6ºplaced) with Adriano and Flu (11º) with Fred, a duel between two dangerous attackers is scheduled for this Sunday at Maracanã. Place your bets!

Good choice, Stanley, Fla sounds better than Flu anyway. At stadium we shout Mengo too.

since you relate FLA with the masses, the nation and parties in the favela, then i guess a Spartak fan would have to simpathise with Flamengo

I am with Dmitri: Always with the masses. Actually Bayern was also the working class club, although not much remained of it. 194 000 people in one game !! Unbelievable. I cannot imagine what the noise was like. I was fortunate to be in Maracana in 2003, but it was more than half empty. Still the crowd made such a noise. This experience was only beaten by seeing River vs Boca.

@Michael: Haha... It is true and the beauty of football. Whatever the topic I will always find the Bayern angle. @urubu: So what is bigger today in Brazil? Fla-Flu or the Confederations Cup Final ?

Dimitri, only in Rio, Flamengo has more fans that all the other clubs together and has majority in all social classes. Always was a team identified with the masses, in the past when our rivals called us "urubu"(vulture) as a racist insult, Flamengo adopted the big black bird as a symbol. Like when they call our side of "favela", the provocation is assumed by the crowd with pride and ends back against opponents. Mani, any game of Fla is bigger than of Brazil, FLA-FLU with a full stadium is a unique spectacle, but Fla is greater than this too, when the Fla crowd full the entire Maracanã is an unforgettable show. The power of mengo fans in Maraca can make the diference, many times i saw this crowd win a hard game.

Was a boring game, for Parreira (Flu coach) was perfect and the Flu goalkeeper was the best in game. At least in this day the Fla achieve the 2º basketball national title in a row, one good thing to celebrate, and marked the definitive break with Nike, new uniforms next game.
