What a match it was against Portsmouth at Old Trafford.

United were in control but I was still very much nervous for the team when only a goal separated the two battling sides.

That night against Pompey, United displayed the brand of football synonymous with the name Manchester United, endlessly piling offensive pressure on the visitor’s defence. Alas, from 21 opportunities (12 were on target), United only managed to make it count twice, one from Rooney and a late goal by Carrick.

We were never really in danger of being made to pay for the less than lethal finishing (Pompey had only 1 shot on target) but still, it could’ve happened. One silly mistake and that could’ve been it. Carrick’s late strike eased the mounting tension and allowed most of us to breathe again! LOL.

Those who shined included Giggsy, Roon, Anderson, Fletcher and Ronaldo.

Giggsy still never ceases to amaze me with his quality of play, even at this age. I’m sure many of my reader’s share the same comfort I have knowing that Ryan is playing for OUR team and not our opponents. He runs like crazy and his passes continue to be immaculate. His assist to Rooney gave United the early lead.

Fletcher is developing very nicely and seems to grow more and more into what’s expected of a senior United squad member.

Ronaldo, too, had a good game. He didn’t manage to get on the scoresheet but I think we can all agree he managed to cause continuous headaches for the Portsmouth defence. I wonder how specatators of the match would rate his performance. I’m not sure of that but I can’t attest the most ODD rating can be found at Goal.com.

Apparently, our Portuguese winger was rated by fans as “Top of the Match” AND “Flop of the Match”!

How weird is that, haha. Objectively speaking, is that even possible? Can a player be both the best and worst performet at the same time? Yes, if there’s only one person in the game. LOL.

My guess is that those who rated him a “flop” must’ve been anti-Ronaldo readers and United-haters.

United defintely deserved to win without a doubt. Only the manner of the victory wasn't as convincing as it should have been. Many times this season already we keep hearing the boss saying that the scoreline should have been 4 or 5 at half-time. And he's right. Somehow, the players aren't finishing as clinically as they have last season. Even with the "dip" in attacking form, United still manage to be at the top of the league and in the running for the Champions League. United are not at their best but are still the best. If that makes any sense. LOL. And yes, I have a friend who tells me, a United without Rooney is not United. I couldn't agree with him more.
