I think most people are familiar with Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry catch-phrase when aiming his revolver at an adversary at point-blank range and threatening to blow off his head:
"You have to ask yourself one question: Do I feel lucky? Well, do you punk?"
So it must have been quite a surprise to many, and probably to Eastwood himself, when he was invited to be a mascot for French side Olympique Lyonnais in their recent match against Sochaux. However, Clint had to make do with being armed with a Lyon shirt and a soccer ball, as opposed to his traditional weapon of choice.
The 79 year-old was in France for Lyon's first film festival where he received an award for his contribution to cinema. No disputes with that.
And the OL bosses no doubt thought that the pistol-whipping Yank could use some scare-tactics to unnerve the opposition. Unfortunately, it didn't go quite according to plan as the Ligue 1 leaders stumbled to a 2-0 defeat - I think the Sochaux players weren't as scared as they could have been had the Lyon bosses really thought this through. I mean, sure, Dirty Harry is Dirty Harry, but it's not quite the same when he is marching around with an umbrella.
IT could be an interesting development to start having celebrities represent a team. If only because it would give us more pointless stuff to talk about! Anyone have any thoughts? p.s. I am not condoning the use of guns on the pitch by mascots!
