Blackburn 0-1 Tottenham: "Big Win?"

One of the headlines today is Harry Redknapp praising Tottenham's win over Blackburn last night. In fact, HR described the 1-0 victory as a "big" one.

It's a matter of perspective really. 3 points, no matter who against, is always important. They say that Champions manage to get those 3 points even when the performance is below par. Well, in that case and on the basis of Tottenham's win yesterday, Spurs should have wrapped up the title after the 1st game of the season.

If you want to look at the result in the confines of a response to the shocking defeat to Fulham, then yeah, it's a big win. Not conceding a goal after conceding 4 in the previous match is a pretty good improvement, but just because there was a 0 next to Blackburn's name, it doesn't mean all is well for Tottenham.

The win was nothing short of a miracle. Gomes in goal was amazing. Nothing short of man of the match. Yes, I still nervously watch when he comes to claim a cross (which he till hasn't quite mastered), but there's no one else I would want between the sticks when it comes to shot-stopping. First-class reflexes meant that Tottenham could hold on for 87 minutes to safeguard their 1 goal lead, and claim 3 vital points.

Next up for the Spurs is a visit from Bolton on Saturday - here's to hoping for another "big win".

I wish Gomes would catch the ball more than punch it. Great shot stopping though. I give my vote for man of match to Gallas. He was injured yet still made many crucial last ditch tackles and covered Bassong's ass repeatedly. One of the few to show nous when under pressure. Good games also from BAE, Jenas, Lennon and VDV. We missed Modric, Dawson and Bale a lot.

In what way is Blackburn away an easy match? We did well to scrape a 1-0 win.

did i say "easy"? i just think our performance generally was really lacking. maybe i didnt emphasise that enough in the post. we looked lost for pretty long patches of the game, the players looked shaky (especially bassong) and in all honesty, Blackburn should have hammered us.

Sorry, I thought you were implying that Blackburn were small opponents who didn't require much effort by your questioning of the "Big Win" comment. I see what you mean now. Bassong is definitely one of the weaker players. We could have done with a bit of actual action in the transfer market (rather than endless speculation and bids that went nowhere) but Harry says he's happy with the squad so we'll just have to trust him to bring us out of the shaky period.

if Spurs win away, its a big win - especially after FA Cup defeat

This win was critical to stay in contention, we are currently outsiders for the 4th place after the transfers and the title talk should end right about now (Redknapp has been rumbling the talk all year)
