Tottenham's Champions League Foray

Young Boys
await.
Jokes and puns aside,
Tottenham
will go into tonight's match against the Swiss club determined to cement their place among Europe's elite in the group stages of the Champions League. Two games separate Spurs from achieving that.
I haven't written a post in a while, but surely this is as good an occasion as any. A moment I have pretty much been waiting for my entire Spurs-supporting life. It's the price that one has to pay when competing in the best league in the world. I mean, if Spurs were a German club, there's not doubt we would be wiping the floor with teams like Bayern Munich and all (special one for you
Mani
!)...
After Saturday's sterling performance against
Manchester City
- where all that was missing was a goal (pretty crucial!) - Tottenham will be full of confidence in
Bern
, at the Stade de Suisse. A failure to deliver won't go down well, and Harry Redknapp knows it: “Obviously there’s more pressure on us than the Swiss team, but it’s a great chance for us. We’ve got to take it." - Damn tootin!
While there were many positives from our opening match, there are also the inevitable concerns that come with having some 20+ attempts on goal, and failing to score. So will HR make any drastic changes?...Especially to the front line? He started at the weekend with Defoe and Crouch (who's head is no doubt in the clouds right now, not just because of his height but also due to reports of his cavorting with chiquitas during the summer), and despite some hot form shown by
Robbie Keane
in pre-season matches.
One thing is sure, Harry Redknapp has confirmed that he will not pick
Ledley King
. I have seen the following touted as a possible starting line-up:
(4-2-3-1): Gomes; Corluka, Dawson, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto; Palacios, Huddlestone; Lennon, Modric, Bale; Crouch.
and also this one:
(4-4-2): Gomes; Corluka, Dawson, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto; Kranjcar, Huddlestone, Modric, Bale; Defoe, Crouch.
The first option seems too defensive for me, and I would like to see Kranjcar in the team, but would also be happy to see the little Mexican
Giovani dos Santos
get a spell in the match. But I suddenly find myself wanting to put too many players in to the team...
My starting line-up would be:
(4-4-2): Gomes; Corluka, Dawson, Bassong, Assou-Ekotto; Lennon, Huddlestone, Modric, Bale; Defoe, Keane.
Subs to be used: Kranjcar, dos
Santos
, Crouch/Pavlyuchenko...
With new sponsors on our team shirts for our European adventures, I hope that Investec will provide us with that
killer
touch that Autonomy couldn't...and hope that we kick-start our season with a solid result tonight.
COYS!

I like Dos Santos, I think he needs 1st team football in a less physical league, he's got a great talent which is being wasted on the bench. I thought Harry wanted to get shot of Keane. What happened there?

@Alcito - well, he started but he didn't deliver. To be honest, I am glad Keane is still around. Brilliant assist tonight for Tottenham's 2nd goal. @ziumbras - It's pretty tragic actually. Terrible 1st half. Gotta be better than that.

I'm not having a dig, but the defending was laughable for their 3rd goal. OK, I can't resist, here come the jokes. 1. I understand the catholic church are fans, I heard they were praying for Young Boys. 2. The only city/town in the world where it's OK to shout "I love young boys" and not be arrested. 3. I hear Gary Glitter is the honorary president. 4. There were no players volunteering to play 'in the hole' for Young Boys. I have many more but I don't want my account suspended.

Haha Alcito! Spurs are so lucky, had they not scored the second, the jokes would have been even worse. Not sure if the underestimated Young Boys or just were caught cold, either way, any repeat of that in the Champions League proper or Europa League, they will get a big spanking. Second leg is tricky as well, they essentially have to score twice to go through, as Young Boys looked really good in attack.

@Alcito - I know you're not having a dig! The defending in general was laughable... Am waiting for more jokes!...although I can probably come up with them too ;-) @SCroyance - I don't know if I'd say we were lucky. Tottenham were getting destroyed in the center and down the left, and once HR brought on Huddlestone we started to control the middle. We'll need to be much better in the 2nd leg though...

and, i'd like to see a change in formation. tottenham can play with a diamond midfield, with modric on the left, kranjcar as the attacking head, lennon on the right, and huddlestone holding... also, a support striker would give pav more holes to drop into in the back line; and allow defoe to come infield much more, without really compromising the availability of mass in the penalty box. and, the can always shuffle to a 4-4-2 with kran on the right and luca switching to central midfielder, if they are in a comfortable position. Now, i know that spurs were being dominated in the midfield region for the first 30 mins of the first leg, but they have to attack to get goals, and so, to me, this should be their mid-attack lineup. what say thou?
