Video Technology - FIFA Get it Wrong Again?

It seems that the world's football governing body has once again decided that modern day technology has no place in the world's most followed sport.
Saturday 6th March will be a date that FIFA could live to regret. And the day will surely come when the football world is once again thrown into controversy over some decision that unfairly impacts upon the result of an important match. We have seen it happen before, and when the opportunity arises to try and make sure that referees are able to make the most informed decisions, it seems that FIFA make the wrong decision. Have they got some other agenda to everyone else?!
Everything has it's time. I concede that if goal line technology had existed in 1966,
Germany
would have most likely lifted the World Cup trophy at Wembley. But the fact is, it didn't. We now live in a different time. An era where within a matter of seconds, a referee can indicate to an assistant that he needs help. And for no other reason than wanting to get it right.
Yes, the referee holding up the game for a minute or two may disrupt the flow of a match, but no more than when a player pretends to be injured and unable to leave the pitch. What are we supposed to understand from FIFA's latest decision? Are we supposed to believe that football will only be exciting if controversy exists? If a referee disallows a goal because the replay shows that a player handled the ball twice and patted it to a teammate to score, would we just sit there in silence, or would we still be emotive about it all?
Video technology is used in most sports nowadays. And it has been put to use successfully. Surely if such technology had been proven to be a failure, we would have already seen it withdrawn from sports such as rugby, cricket, tennis, and american football. But I can only assume that it is still used in these sports because it has been well accepted by all involved.
Fundamentally, what positives can be gained by denying football the opportunity to evolve into a modern-day sport? And what massively frustrating event will have to take place (again) for FIFA to come to the realisation that video technology does have a place in football, and that they were wrong previously?
It seems that everyone who plays a part in the day-to-day matches - the referees, the players, the fans - wanted to see steps taken to ensure that referees are given the best opportunity to make the right decisions. Everyone except those who somehow govern our game.
What's your take?

Even through I am for video reference, the argument regarding to the game not be able to flow and disrupt it is strong one...In the games where it is used - American football, ice hockey - time stops when there is stoppage(hence no additional times) and of course in cricket and tennis there is no time...as i was writing that, i also thought about broadcasters even through they seem to be for right now, i am not sure their gonna like outcome...video replay might sometimes take few minutes, which is more additional times in the end...lots of broadcasters right now blame that it affects its tv schedule due of late finishing games(i get annoyed when Sports channels start complaining when most of they tv schedule is consistent of replays)

like Elnur, its the amount of stoppages that bothers me. then, the cost of having such systems introduced on lower level football

dmitri - it doesn't need to be introduced across the board - you don't see the electronic eye at your local tennis competition. But for the big games, incl. premiership/later rounds of cup games etc. then it should be used in my opinion.Did FIFA give their official reason?

I have been on both sides of the referee's decision and yes! it hurts and yes! it's fun to talk about it for next 20 years and yes! in essence a goal-line technology would have solved half the world's problems. My two bit is that I am yet to see a comprehensive plan on how this technology would be implemented, how will it effect the counter attacking and why wouldn't any team wouldn't mind challenging every single call, essentially what will stop football from becoming FOOTBALL. I for one agree with FIFA because this technology DOES NOT suits beautiful game and I fear that it will change the game for worst.P.S. I think using sports like Cricket, Tennis, Ice Hokey, NFL as a reference in this argument is fundamentally wrong because stoppage between each ball, serve and play is part of the game and do not effect the momentum of the sport.

Seagull, what is and isn't an important match in football? fine, we could limit the use to certain competition. an incident in division 1 between Leeds and Newcastle would cause the same trouble as a world cup Hand of God. unless, we dont care so much about that, too. personally, a law to govern post-match sanctions would do a better job. if a video is available, then take post-match disciplinary action. criticised referees could take responsibility and take the case to a disciplinary court. maybe the score doesnt change, but the player gets punished

besides, in tennis, its a matter of in or out. in football, the goal line is least problematic. its more about bad tackles, dodgy hand-balls, etc... if we're talking abt goal-line in/out incidents, then lets bore two additional assistants sitting 90/120 minutes inside both goals. its not like we're talking about 120 mph serves or a lightning speed hockey pluck

there is always the option of introducing a number of times a team can "challenge" a referees decision although I am less in favour of that. I think fundamentally, the technology should be used at the referees' discretion in order to help them if they themselves are not sure. I don't think the stoppages need be that long...a maximum of 30 seconds...and I wouldn't have a problem with them adding that time on at the end.
