Manchester United 2-2 Sunderland - Not what Champions are made of

What a cock-up. We have a home-match against Sunderland, not the best team in the world, and we mess-up the opportunity to get a good 3 points and extend our lead at the top of the league, on the same weekend that Chelsea and Liverpool go head-to-head. Definitely a cock-up.

No offense to Sunderland, or Steve Bruce for that matter. But what exactly were the Reds, and Fergie, thinking? The team lacked that movement and accuracy in passing that so often separates us from the other teams. Nothing seemed to work, Sunderland pressured us well, and it paid off for them. Darren Bent's early strike seemed to dish it out to us, and give the harsh reality of how we were playing.

I think Fergie made a mistake in starting with Welbeck. He's a good player, a great prospect, and I am looking forward to the time where he becomes a 1st team regular. BUT, he is not ready yet, and I definitely can't understand why Fergie shoved him out on the left. Rooney would have been better there.

We know that if a team takes the lead against Man Utd, they generally wake the beast. But it didn't really happen like that in the 1st half. So we came out for the 2nd half, and no doubt Fergie had some harsh words for the team in the changing room. Berba produced the goods, but then we lost control again. Lame beast.

Sunderland's strikers have been on form this campaign, and Jones got himself on the scoresheet too. I really don't rate him. Sorry to all those that do. But, he scored. End of.

Commence insane United pressure on the Sunderland goal in the last minutes, and poor old Utd old-boy Richardson getting sent off towards the death. Whether the referee was harsh or not is a matter of opinion, but it definitely helped us and gave some extra momentum to our push for an equalizer. And who should we thank? None other than Anton, brother of Rio, to deflect in an Evra shot with literally no time left.

So we saved a point, the agony of a lame defeat. But we can't expect to win anything like that. Definitely not the performance that Champions are made of.

Check out my grades and let me know what you think.

True, United can play much better, no reason to draw at home to Sunderland, and weird selection choices.

Considering that United typically start the season off slowly, then slip into gear after Boxing Day, also Ronaldo and Tevez left, Ferdinand and van der Sar have both been injured for most of the season so far, and United STILL are leading the league...that's pretty amazing. Also, Berbatov and Rooney are beginning to link up, much like Berbatov and Keane did. If this is their "bad" period, and it is still good enough to get them to the top of the table...what does that say about how they will be when they truly find their stride?

I think that the most apparent aspect of that tie was the inability of Ben Foster to command his area. There was nothing he could have done after O'Shea let Bent have enough yards to shoot on goal (hell of an accurate shot I thought), but the second was nonsense. I think team are wizening up to the fact that Foster is a chink in United's armor. Reid floated in a pretty inoccuous ball for Jones to go for, and Foster just flapped at it. You never would have seen VDS, pre-injury Cech, or Reina for that matter be so non-committal like that.
