Football’s the greatest: but it isn’t everything!

Oh my, football wherever you turn to! Isn’t that great? La Liga, Serie A, Carling Cup, DFB-Pokal, Coupe de la Ligue, U20 World Cup on Friday and then all European Leagues – football, football, football. The upcoming nights are going to be packed with amazing matches. Wow!

But there are other sports as well! There’s amongst others an interesting ODI cricket tournament.

ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa

Even if I don’t understand all rules, I think that cricket is really interesting. Have you heard about the upcoming tournament? English and a big part of Asian people live this sport, but other Europeans, North Africans or Americans might not know it… It’s captivating, but a bit difficult. Football is definitely easier to get and the result is less difficult to interpret.

To be honest, I think that ODIs (one day matches) are already very long. The 5-day matches (in The Ashes) are too much for me. The best matches for us beginners are Twenty20 confrontations which are intense and short (up to 4 hours).

But I guess that this competition is going to be great stuff. ODIs are quite good. I like them! And now this trophy, hosted by South Africa, is a nice chance to catch up with the rules and techniques.

The matches are going to be played in Centurion and Johannesburg. Is this already a rehearsal for the football World Cup 2010? There won’t be as many spectators for this tournament as next year but it can’t hurt… At least the hosts will know what to improve!

Most of the participants (South Africa, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, England, Pakistan, West Indies, Australia and India) played some warm up matches before the opening game tonight. This is something that’s doesn’t really exist in football. I mean, there are friendly tournaments before the league restarts, but except for that there aren’t real comparisons.

We are the champions!

Well, who can win that competition? I love that fact that some of the participants are countries that would ne never be able to play in a football world cup, like West Indies or Pakistan. The latter is a candidate for the victory of the trophy as well as South Africa or current champion Australia. It would be nice if the host would win (after all they’ve been waiting for a victory in this tournament for 11 years now even though they’re the best ODI team).

I always follow the matches on Cricinfo but I definitely need to find a live stream (if I have the time).

So, my plan: during the day I’m going to follow those cricket matches and in the evening I’ll try to watch as many football games as possible because it’s just the most awesome sport on earth!

Cricket on TV I can't get into. But once spent a lovely summer's afternoon watching a 20/20 game at my local county team. I enjoyed it - at the beginning the cricket was almost a side event with everyone chatting, drinking, eating etc. But slowly the tension starts to build and, at least at the match I saw, it got very exciting at the end. And we won too.Still football for me though...

I only recently started to get into cricket. I always liked watching Twenty20, since it started, and I've started to dabble in and out of test and ODI. I don't see much of it on TV, seeing as it's all on bloody Sky but I have recently discovered Test Match Special on radio Five Live. Even if you don't understand cricket, or particularly like it, it can be a great show to have on in the backround while you go about your business while the likes of Henry Blofeld, Geoff Boycott and Phil Tuffnel blabber on about, seemingly, anything but cricket!

I agree that there are other sports, but I don't think I could ever get into cricket (a game that can last up to three days and end in a tie). However, tennis should definetely be up there: There is Roger Federer, with the athleticism and grace of a ballet dancer (see also here: http://straightsets.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/09/14/tenniss-connection-with-ballet/), there is John McEnroe, with the pure rage and energy of a boxer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ekQ_Ja02gTY&feature=related), and, of course - the women's game: It's one of the few professional sports where women have almost reached the same popularity as the men. Finally, on this note: The battle of the sexes (Bobby Riggs vs. Billy Jean King) is a classic, almost like a World Cup final, or, rather like a boxing match, including trash talking, media hype and a 1:1-match that left no wish undesired...

...which brings me to one more sport that could compete with football (even though, more in the past then now): Boxing. Unlike in football, here the GOAT ("greatest of all times") debate has a very clear answer: Muhammad Ali. Unless you remember, a classic to watch is "when we were kings", the documentary on the "rumble in the jungle" (the fight Ali-Foreman, which took place in Zaire), an event of historic proportions. It was a thriller, a mind game, psychological warfare, a tactical chess game, and -most and foremost- a great fight. (Unfortunately, nothing came even close to it afterwards)

Last, but not least: Here is Muhammad Ali's receipe for life: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ebu0OBa1pus Now back to football?

Sophie, Cricket really??? It is one of the games I can't figure out. I'd love to understand better American football, but I am simply too far from the game. Always try to get up in the middle of the night to see the Super Bowl.

@seagull68: I would love to see a cricket game in a stadium once. Everybody told me that it's so funny. It's a big social! @Michael, Ankur: I hope South Africa will make it. They're the best ODI team recently but they can't win. That's a shame. But if not, India would be great (let's hope it, Ankur) :) @Andi: there would never be any cricket on German or French TV - nothing! @Benjamin & dmitri: tennis is just amazing - I love it. Ice hockey is amazing (and a bit like boxing, no I'm just kidding, but they're quite aggressive). @Mani: I tried to stay up for the Super Bowl last year, but there were just so many commercial breaks that I couldn't stand it (I love foreign commercial - it's very interesting and says a lot about culture - but not in the middle of the night). Do you know the rules of rugby? Fascinating as well. Thx for all your replies! It's great to know that there are people to discuss everything!

Rugby union is a much underated sport that could be bigger in the northern hemisphere Germans would love this once again rules and culture play a big part as to why it's not truly global. Italy ,Spain,Mexico ,China, Greece,Turkey you should be ashamed you don't play cricket it's a real mans game with loads of skills required all your countries could have great wickets as Ankur has suggested home advantage really make a difference only Aussies and Windies have dominated world wide in recent history.
07.10.2009 12:11
@ Ankur: Well apparently we both don't know that much about it. Who would have thought that Australia will win this trophy?! Rugby Union is amazing. I'm so happy to be able to follow it here in France. Because Germans don't rugby nor cricket. Shame upon our head!

and cricket is a funny game, i prefer soccer coz unlike cricket, it has very few stops between(a 10+ second gap between every ball, nd 60+ sec gap between overs)... nd ankur. dude, if u ever played pro, u shud knw dat india had no chance of winnin this c.trophy... yuvraj n zaheer were out, ishant was bowlin short nd wide, nd some of dhoni's decisions were debatable... nd another thing i hate bout cricket, THERE ARE TWO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN ONE YEAR!!! too much? hell yeah! lets not discuss criicket here k? is there a www.cricko.com?
