Does it annoy everybody else that football has turned into such a pansy total non-contact sport?

What has happened to the days of the steam-roller shoulder barge an general hussle and bussle?
Its typical of this day and age with political correctness and everything for everyone that the FA turn football into a game everybody can play- fair enough but the highest level of the sport should not only be for the geeky kid in the corner who practices his keep ups all day every day to look pretty which in turn has led to a diving cheating culture because nowaays pretty much any contact is illegal!. We all enjoy attractive football but surely we enjoy a good shoulder barge into the advertising hoardings on the opposing team just as much! Why im on it- why do goalkeepers get such good protection when they are usually the biggest guys on the pitch!!! Fair enough again that they dont get kicked, punched and pushed into net but when an opponents hair brushes on their cheek and they get a free kick its a bit too much!

I know some of this may be against most views but surely the bit about roughing it up a bit should speak for the majority, please discuss!!!

P.S: Im sure the so called BIG teams will disagree as they buy the fancy players and  oppose the rough side more than anyone!

Sepp Blatter is ensuring it is a non contact sport to protect the flair players in this day and age 21st century they should be allowed to dive and roll around in safety. If you want rough watch a Sunday pub team like ...... the baggies lol. Women and gay folk and transexuals have a right to play the greatest game in the world!

@Coz - and this is why there should be an ice hockey element to the game: if two players wanna throw down, let them go at it. They should still be punished after, but it's their choice! ;-)

Well the women probably give more than the men nowadays Neal, lol. @ Dan K, Ice hockey players have helmets, gloves and padding and the ref stops it as soon as gloves and helmets are off so not sure how it would work for football but interesting concept, anyone make it feasable so it can work for football???

In reality, it's a question of taking a look at the rules and providing instruction to the referees. An example - I got quite frustrated a long time ago seeing a free-kick being given every time a player challenged a goalkeeper for the ball. It didn't seem to matter whether the player had a legitimate chance of getting the ball, or made a good and fair leap. A jump was enough for the referee to blow the whistle. Those are the kind of things that need to be sorted (the little things). @Coz - I am still interested in exploring the hockey-football concept!

It's because the players have got bigger and stronger. The hatchet men of the past were smaller guys so they didn't have that much of an advantage. I'm sure given the oppurtuinity some of the hulks of nowadays would do awful damage to the messi's of this world, but the powers that be don't want football to become a game for tall people like nearly every other sport, that's probably why and tbf nor do I.

@ Dan K, no takers on Hockey-football concept yet, maybe we could invent it. I agree its the small thing that need sorting. Also the way defenders shepherd the ball over the by-line (Obstruction if anywhere else on the pitch) i think blowing for a foul in that instance would make for much more interesting games and maybe a few more goals and dodgy defending to watch!

@ Michael, i sort of agree and disagree- i dont believe all bruisers of days gone by were small and i do think people would gang up on the messis of this world thats why im not calling for kicking 10 lumps out of each other every time someone has the ball just a little shoulder argy bargy really. Think it would get rid of some of the diving too!!!

@Coz - Good call on the defenders shepherding the ball out. Another one that drives me nuts. How is it not preventing the opposing player from getting the ball?! I am not sure where referees' current interpretation on these things is coming from, but it's got to change. Seem to be more and more foul throws these day too...definitely worth a kung-fu kick while wearing ice skates... ;-)

Footie players are far to soft nowadays i also hate the pacy players expecting slow defenders to move away at lightening speed (they don't think that quick) when they knock the ball round them Crap Refs there is a difference to blatant obstruction. If players shield the ball tackles from behind should be allowed SEPP BLATTER SORT IT OUT!

I hope I have understood correctly and if not I hope I have misinterpreted the comment. Legitimize actions that are not specific to football because that would be attractive to some who see in this sport something like a battle, the kind that both diisfrutan viewers like ice hockey because it is protecting the physical integrity and delfutbol the most important feature, the ability, would impair it, so I think that those who see a friendly as a synonym for loss of manly vigor, it seems completely wrong joining this sport. Should not forget that football is not without physical touch, but it can not to make it more spectacular and not girls play some see it as PARC, the legalization of virtual aggression.

@ Dan K, now that would be interesting! Dont think the helmets would work though, todays pretty boy players wouldn't want to ruin their hair!
04.09.2009 16:47
@ Ted yes tackles from behind in current circumstances should be allowed to stop defenders shielding balls, the way they stick their elbows into attackers too whilst doing it- imagine trying that on a goalkeeper when attacking an incoming corner?!!! On the slow defenders moving out the way that explains Eduardo/Taylor stunt- Bluenoses are the slowest of them all!!!
04.09.2009 16:53
@ Roberto, think you have misinterpreted the main point, its not full on man war, just a little bit of the old shoulder barge and now we have added the annoyance of defenders shielding ball over the by-line. On the legalisation of virtual aggression point, Rugby is all about aggression but there are very few bust ups after the game- more of a friendly pint and chat not the moaning and bit**ing we get on the football pitch week in week out, plus they dont harrass the refs(as punishment will follow if they do). Maybe it would toughen them up a bit.
