My last blog post is more than half a year old! How come? Well, many reasons. One of them is that
I spent the last three to four months blogging about climate change in European Journalism Centre's project TH!NK ABOUT IT
. Which
I won
:-)
With the exception of the attack on
Togo
's bus -
which seems to be related to another blog of mine, Ecowar
- it has been very nice and relaxing following a bit of football again. Except of course many leagues are on winter hiatus. But perhaps in the future this will change?
What football has in common with climatology
In simplified prognoses of the future Danish climate it's often described as "a bit like the current climate in
France
". Current weather clearly shows this is an over-simplification.
First of all, just like football, weather and results will continue to fluctuate. We'll get snow and
Chelsea
will lose every now and then. Secondly, like the world of football, climatology is still complex. It isn't easy to predict the weather tomorrow or the precise result of next week's games.
Climate change is a bit like a significant change in the rules of the game, though. In the long run it will change predictions of weather. Just like if UEFA decided to make the goals twice as big or the away teams play down hill. Which in return would produce some weird and unforseen results. Like the disruption of the thermohaline circulation could be involved in the current snow?
League statuses
I don't even follow the
English Premier League
- but since I'm using a Perl script to catch up on what I missed during COP15 I might as well try and catch up on that one as well.
Chelsea (unbeaten at home),
Manchester United
and
Arsenal
. Somewhat below that level are
Tottenham
,
Manchester City
, Aston
Villa
,
Liverpool
and
Birmingham
.
Birmingham
!? Wow. The only team that already seems to be in
real
serious relegation trouble is
Portsmouth
.
In the
Spanish Primera Division
I'm not at all surprised to see
Barcelona
unbeaten at #1 followed by
Real Madrid
(unbeaten at home). A distance behind them is
Valencia
. At rock bottom is
Xerez
with only 7 points, no wins away and 12 of their 17 games without scoring.
In the
Italian Serie A
it appears Internationale
Milano
is smashing everyone again! Unbeaten at home and eight points ahead of
AC Milan
at second spot. There is a bit of a drop down to the rest of the league where
Juventus
,
Napoli
,
Roma
and
Fiorentina
is only slightly ahead. The relegation game seems to be between
Bologna
,
Catania
,
Atalanta
and
Siena
.
The German, French, Danish and perhaps more leagues I'll catch up on later. Because they are still not playing.
But please update me... what else did I miss?

Benno, good to see you back ! And congratulations on winning the blogging award. I believe climate change is much more important than football these days. At Bayern we had a lot of climate change in the last months. First it was really hot, then things cooled down. In general I believe there were not that many surprises in the major leagues this year. Maybe the fact that Liverpool was kicked out in the CL was the biggest surprise.

Dear BESTIE No7,My approach to this topic is a scientific one. I do not care about political conspiracy theories.

I can't agree on climate change. I've been called a skeptic on many things, and this is another one. All the reports we get now show that the research quoted by top spokemen for climate change is very challengeable. In fact much of it has been exposed as government propaganda. It's embarrassing to see all the evidence that points to a lot of hype, and not documented science.

Jon, coming from a science background I haven't been very impressed by the so called "exposures". In fact, as far as I can tell they are all politically and psychologically motivated make-belief theories, "climategate" included.
