The Un(Luck) of the Irish - World Cup Playoff Heartbreak for Ireland

Ireland held France to a 1-1 draw in the 2nd leg of the World Cup qualifier, but the result wasn't enough to get them through to the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. And with what horror to be denied a place in the world's biggest football tournament.

France secured their place in the competition by winning 2-1 on aggregate, but tonight's match is without doubt bound to fall under the spotlight (with the inevitable of calls for more technology to be used in matches).

Robbie Keane's 1st half goal had levelled the scores over the course of the two matches, and so the tie was forced to extra time. With 12 minutes gone in the 1st half of extra time, Thierry Henry shamelessly controlled the ball with his hand (twice) before laying the ball for Gallas to score from a yard or two out.

Ireland's desperate protestations were immediately overruled by the official and his assistants. Take a look...what do you think?

             Â

Ireland were unable to recover from the blow, and have been cheated of a place in the World Cup by Henry, one of the most respected professionals in the game. However, a goal is a goal, and just like with Maradona's Hand of God, the result is what counts.

France will be in the World Cup, Ireland will not.

It was handball, there is no doubt about that, but for some reason the officials missed it. They handled the game very well I thought, it is just a shame that they missed the one crucial decision of the game. I think the only answer is a video referee, as they have in cricket and rugby..... Cannot say much else..... Now the Irish know how we felt with the Marradona hand of god goal.....

Very unfair, i felt that Ireland deserved to win and wanted it more (although France is more talented)

Ireland have themselves to blame. They had so many easy chances and at this level and stage you have to score. They were no doubt the better team.As for France.....what can we say. They always have luck in their side. And Henry is the biggest CHEATER in world football.

Henry would need to do a lot to justify his HANDS there. i dont think its about fooling referees/umpires, though. unfortunate incident for Ireland, and if Henry is a real man, he'll want to fix this with a good world cup result. he should

Unfortunately for Henry who should be remembered for his skill, passion, talent and the fair way he played the game he will forever be remembered for this one incident. I think he will regret it for the rest of his life. Maybe in the years after his retirement he will reflect on this moment and share with us his true fellings. But football is football and I suppose its why we all love the great game....

What an absolute disgrace. It was very fortunate that france were seeded in these qualifiers. UEFA changed the rules to allow them a safer path to the world cup, Henry broke the rules to score, then the referee and linsemen ignored the rules to allow France to qualify. Its very simple Ireland created more chances over two legs and showed more passion and determination. France are one of the most yellow livered outfits on the planet, who rely on influencing tournaments and matches for their rite of passage. I sincerely hope they are knocked out in the group stages of the world cup qualifiers.

@Jumeirah - what?! I get your point, but are you kidding me?! Ireland's inability to put other chances away has nothing to do with the fact that France were awarded a goal that shouldn't have been, and which ultimately was the goal that knocked Ireland out... I think it's clear how most fans feel.

Not to be too harsh, but if we look at it from the perspective, did Ireland deserve to go through, the answer must be no. They had 210 minutes to score 2 goals, they only got 1, that is the reason they are out. They were playing a team that has a lame duck coach, and they should have found ways to exploit that, changing tactics 2-3 times a game, as the French are not well organized right now, look at how they play the offside tactic and their set piece routines are very poor, Ireland should have targeted that. As an Arsenal fan, Henry has done 'sneaky' things like this before, so he hasn't only become a 'devil' after this, he has done things like this before.

Biggest nonsense in football history maybe, we french fans are ashamed of what hapenned, we can't refuse the world cup but we can't celebrate the qualification either. Domenech never diserved to participate in a world cup in the first place, he never demonstrated real coaching qualities, the french federation is rotten from the inside and always was direspectful of the dreams of a nation, french football, shame and stupidity, this all what domenech could give us. Sorry Ireland!

uefa and fifa are not football organisations, they are "give us money" organisations. don't forget who is running uefa? is it irishman or a frenchman ?

having thought abt this again, though, perhaps we out to further manipulate post-match punishments. Henry could be punished with match bans. perhaps the scoreline should stay - more fun that way. its also nonsense to have technologies stop the match each time, or to arrange for replays - unless there are less matches being arranged overall (less UCL games, international, to give space for replays)
