Tottenham 2-1 Birmingham Report – Brum Slip Up

An injury-time slip by former
Tottenham
defender
Stephen Carr
provided Spurs with the opportunity to score a crucial winner and maintain their 100% record.
Aaron Lennon
was on hand to place the ball past
Joe Hart
, the
Birmingham
goalkeeper. Despite the victory, Tottenham have currently dropped to 2nd place on goal difference following
Chelsea
’s 3-0 win over
Burnley
earlier in the day.
Tottenham started the game in dominant fashion, and the team created a number of good chances which they were unable to convert. The starting 11 also seemed to show discipline and determination in pressurizing Birmingham’s players when they were on the ball. Despite the at times unrelenting pressure that
the Blues
faced during the first 45 minutes, they managed to keep Spurs at bay and go in level at half-time. Birmingham manager
Alex
McLeish would have also have been encouraged by that his team had on occasion caused problems for the opposing team.
Harry Redknapp made one change at half-time, bringing Scottish International right-back on for
Ledley King
, but was forced into making a second within minutes of kick-off, after
Luka Modric
took a knock. The Croatian had been impressive in the first half, at the center of most of Tottenham’s build up play and proving a constant threat to Birmingham. Tall man
Peter Crouch
replaced him and offered Tottenham a different dimension and effective target for crosses and long balls.
It was
Peter
Crouch who broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, when heading home following a deep cross to the far post. Tottenham’s jubilation was short lived, and a moment of miscommunication and indecision between Spurs goalkeeper
Carlo Cudicini
and Hutton provided
Lee Bowyer
with the opportunity to stab home into an empty net just 3 minutes later.
Prior to the goal, Birmingham had thrown on substitute
Cristian Benitez
, who caused problems for the Tottenham defense and the Ecuadorian could prove to have been a good signing for the Blues as the season
goes
on. His introduction spurred on Birmingham and they created a number of chances which to the relief of the home crowd, they were unable to convert.
The referee had initially signaled for 4 minutes to be added on at the end of the 90, but added a further minute following a rather long Birmingham substitution. It was during this extra minute, and almost the last kick of the game, that Stephen Carr slipped inside his own half and Spurs broke away. The ball was moved across the pitch and Lennon cut in from the left side of the penalty before firing past Hart into the bottom left-hand corner.
Following four wins in four, Harry Redknapp’s Tottenham seem to be asserting themselves as early contenders in the Premier League race, and will definitely buoyant after claiming 3 points when it seemed that they would only take 1.

I cannot believe it! I Watched the match till the 90th minute but had to leave, it was 1-1 when i left, lol!!! Damn great result for us, what can i say? I hope Crouch will play in the next game in the place of Keane, he offered allot more than Keane did, which seems a little off form to me. Defoe and Lennon were a little bit too selfish on occasions, we have a pretty serious problem at Center back if there is no King in the back, Corluka is a filler in for that position, i hope he will not need to start in the next 2 crucial games. I also hope Modric will be ok for those games because he was awesome at times during the first half.

@Chris - What a finale to the match. I was pulling my hair out in frustration. Sometimes, we just lack that killer instrinct and are prone to making that terrible mistake at the back. To be honest, I like Keane. A lot. I think he is a great motivational player who never stops running, and who plays a big role in verbally spurring on his teammates. Modric was incredible but needs to work on his shooting a little!

@dimitri - Best Spurs player so far this season - Aaron Lennon. He hasn't really been setting the stage on fire, but he has got some crucial goals and has caused problems for whichever team Spurs have played against so far this season. Not sure about Pavlyuchenko. He came on for the last 10 mins yesterday but didn't really have that much of an impact. In fact, in the first 5 or 6 mins after he came on, Spurs didn't create a chance. Don't know if he will leave, but he will need to start taking any opportunity he is given if he is to put himself in contention for a starting place...but I don't see this happening to be honest.

tremendous quality in the first half by us but they got frustrated by Brum parking a bus in front of their goal. You can't underestimate the effect of losing King and Modric both on this game and into the future. With them off the old insecurities arose and it was lucky Lennon managed to get in a great shot - in fact we were under pressure the last 10. Still, good sides win when under pressure and we did just that so there are a heap of positives for us. Looking ahead i don't fear Man U so much (aside from Rooney - here's hoping Ledley is fit) but i do worry about Chelsea. I fear they'll have too much quality everywhere for us.

@teddy - Defoe didn't show the form that he has in the previous matches, but I wouldn't say he looked second rate. I think it's a question of fitness more than pressure. The players seem to be going in strong from the very start of matches, putting lots of pressure on the opposing teams, but then looking jaded in the last 20 mins.

@Stephen - Losing the two of them will be huge, especially when considering the other defensive injuries we have, and the fact that Modric is our only "tried and tested" flair player. I would like to see GDS get closer to first team action and see what he can do. Chelsea do seem like they'll be the team to beat...
