Arsenal managerArsene Wenger will cut a frustrated figure after hearing the news that JackWilshere has been included in the England Under-21 squad for the EuropeanChampionships.
Wenger voiced hisconcern at the midfielder’s inclusion in the squad in fear that the 19-year-oldwill suffer from burnout and be seriously affected from not having a summerbreak, unlike the rest of his squad.
Wenger is worriedWilshere, who won the PFA young player of the year award this season for hisexcellent performances for the Gunners, will struggle to recapture his formhaving played competitive football for a solid year. Wilshere has played 52games so far in all competitions this campaign but has always stated he wouldnever turn down the chance to represent his country at any level, whether itsunder-21 or full international honours.
Burnout could be anissue but not for a 19-year-old, who should be enthusiastic and fit enough toplay a handful of games at a major tournament. Youngsters should be motivated toplay on the bigger stage in front of a worldwide audience to ensure they canhandle himself when he is playing in World Cups for the senior national side - and with England amongst the sports betting favourites for the tournament, it could be an excellent opportunity to taste success after his disappointment at club level this year.
Wilshere has thehunger and desire to play for England and the decision to play forthe under-21s despite being a regular in the full set-up should be up to him. Totravel with players the same age and enjoy playing in a major tournament willhelp him in future Premier League’s, World Cup’s and Champions League’s. Hisspark in the midfield will inspire others around him which is needed in a majorinternational tournament.
Playing withexciting players such as £35million striker Andy Carroll, Micah Richards andJordan Henderson can only benefit Wilshere and allow him to adapt his game andget better in the future even if he is to rough Wenger’s feathers in theprocess.
However, otherplayers in the past have struggled from playing all year round includingFernando Torres who has failed to recapture his form. The £50 million Chelsea striker has failed to have a summer break in thelast two years due to his involvement for Spainin major competitions such as the Confederations Cup and the WorldCup.
Wilshere isdifferent. He is younger, hungrier and plays a way that allows him to glidearound the pitch similar to the midfielders Pep Guardiola has at his disposal atBarcelona, and sports bets backing him for player of the tournament could easily end up paying out.
Wilshere will not only benefit from the experience but Arsenal andEngland will do too which is good forall involved parties.
