August 19, 2009 was a nightmare for all Manchester United fans. No single individual on the globe would believe such lazy appearance from Manchester United against newcomer Burnley and, to make things even more unbelievable, lose with one astonishingly scored goal.
As a Manchester United supporter for years, I have got used to a very slow start from the past three season's champions and a sudden move towards the top of the table. But one thing is not easy for me to digest. How on Earth can Manchester United play so badly against Burnley? Especially taking into account that Manchester United have won all the matches against newcomers to Premier League for the past two season. There is no hesitation that if someone who didn't know a lot about football watched the game, he would mistake Manchester United for Burnley.
Today, I was listening to Radio 5 Football Daily. It was the most dominant story of the night, and I would like to congratulate Burnley for their great play. However, for most of the second half they were defending with 11 men. And I adore the whole team staff's modesty. They were not as proud as they had to be after beating the champions of the past three seasons.
Something, though, was annoying. A long time supporter of Burnley was interviewed and he said that the result showed that Manchester United were not as magical as they pretend they are. There are two intolerable words in his sentence. One is magical. No, Manchester United are not magical, they are united; that's what the name implies. To his information, three years of successive championship don't come with magic. It comes with hard work and brilliant management of Sir Alex Fergusen. If you want to see true Manchester United, wait a bit more and you'll see that nothing has ever been magic. Manchester United's dominance over the Premier League during Christmas, while all the other teams fail to play well has always a significant point about them for the past years, just for an example.
The second word is "pretending". Manchester United have never pretended that they are the champions. For the champions there is no need to pretend. 90 points last season gives the true picture, especially when you track their move from low positions in the beginning to the championship.
So, whether you are a modest proud of Burnley's victory over Manchester United or go crazy with such a slender win, watch your words before you say anything. Manchester United have been the champions of the Premier League more than any other team, even Liverpool who had won the previous league more.
Finally, I hope Sire Alex does enough to free Manchester United from this bad form soon. Although, our other problem is lots of keyplayers' injuries.
