Arsenal need to gamble more and get into the 6-yard box
Por 360footbal...

A great result at the weekend, but I have one small complaint: why don't we get bodies in and around the six-yard box when crosses are coming in?

Anyway, I'll come to that later.

Meanwhile, wow! What a start it was against West Ham! Free flowing flourishing moves that led to Denilson's stunning opener. Yes, Denilson! He might not seem to do that much, but he's not afraid to shoot....and ain't we glad about that?

Suddenly, we took our foot off the gas. The Hammers started to make inroads. I thought we could concede if we didn't get a grip on the game, which for no apparently reason was turning West Ham's way.

A long punt forward. Franco chased. He got his body the wrong side of Vermaelen as he fell. Surely it wasn't a penalty. But why did Vermaelen look so guilty? Surely the ref couldn't be 100% sure, yet he gave the pen all the same. And Diamanti never misses from the spot.

But Almunia saved it. Okay, he was off his line, but it still was a great save. Everyone must say 'thank you' to the Spanish waiter if we win the league, as make no mistake that save came at a crucial time.

Wenger spoke to the ref at half time and you could understand why. The Vermaelen red card was harsh to say the least. If that was a red, then Sol Campbell's at Hull City should have been too. Replays showed it might not have even been a penalty. So you could undertand Wenger's anger.

Down to ten men, West Ham started with most of the possession, but they weren't exactly troubling Almunia - which was just as well, as despite the penalty save most of us still don't trust him to perform under extreme pressure.

Meanwhile, we do put crosses in the box...but no one wants to take a gamble and finish from 6 yards. Yes, I'm talking to you Nasri and Arshavin, who both pulled up at various times when they should have pushed on and met a low cross.

It should have been ten versus ten, when Behrami clattered Fabregas from behind. But this is England. The Thuggiership. Noble started bleating at the ref. Tomkins' barge on Clichy went unpunished. Tomkins even had the nerve to abuse the ref and Gael, but still no yellow card.

With three West Ham fouls to every Arsenal one, surely they'd foul one of our players in the box? Erm, no. Upson managed to concede a dopey handball in the area (making me, for once, understand why Wenger got rid off him)...and Cesc stepped up to convert.

2-0: job done. Top of the league. Let's hope we can say that again at the end of the season.

ARSENAL do gamble a lot and get into the six yard box. how do you think our defenders are caught on the wrong side on the pitch on counter? and i saw total surprise rather than guilt on vermaleens face on being red carded

I'm not sure I agree with you about the surprise on Vermaelen's face. To me, it looked like guilt. Why did he look at the ref? Why didn't he just act like nothing happened? To me, that would be the natural reaction if you were not guilty. Can I ask you this? Who gets in the 6 yard box? I have rarely seen anyone in there. Obviously, I don't expect our defenders to be there except at deadballs, but strikers should score their fair share of tap-ins...and ours simply don't. We always want to score the spectacular goal and we often do. But we'd score even more if one of strikers was a real fox-in-the-box. We had one in Eduardo until he was chopped in half at St Andrews, but that's the Thuggiership for you!
