United today announced that Darron Gibson has agreed a three-year contract extension at Old Trafford and is aiming to challenge for regular first-team involvement. Being one of the new favorites of Sit Alex, this was not a shock but the guy has a long way to go, so it seems for now.

“I am very happy to commit my future to United,”
“Last season I enjoyed every opportunity and when I got my chance I wanted to prove what I could do. I hope to continue that this season.”

Fergie expects a lot from the young man from Irish central midfield.

“Darron was one of the young players who emerged last season as a United first-team player,”
“His appearance ratio did not really reflect the high regard in which we hold him, as he has constantly worked hard to challenge for a first team spot”

Darren is a regular goal supplier, that is whenever he is given opportunities (Unlike Tevez who tries to shout back when given a chance and failing). We saw some impressive strikes last season, notably his screaming effort against Hull, and he’s done that consistently at every level through the United ranks. In case you do not know, he was a key part of their Carling Cup success and marked his potential on the final day of the season when he scored the only goal of the game against Hull City with a spectacular long-range strike.

Now that Sir Alex has made it known that he wants his middle men to make up some of the deficit of goals after Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure. So, expect to see plenty more of Gibson in 2009/10. Look what you lost Tevez dear!
