Headbutts seem to be the in thing for football dressing rooms at the moment. Not one, but two managers are currently facing probes over allegations they decided to dish out a Glasgow kiss after a disappointing defeat. It’s hard to work out which case is worse. Jim Magilton has been suspended by QPR as the club looks into claims he attacked midfielder Akos Buzsaky. Although Tony Pulis hasn’t been suspended, his alleged transgression – which involved striker James Beattie – is compounded by the fact the Stoke manager is said to have been naked at the time. Perhaps club officials are reluctant to probe too deeply.
It seems likely that the two incidents and the subsequent investigations will dominate news in the Premier League and Championship for some time to come. However, as titillating as any revelations might be, they will only serve as a distraction both players and fans. QPR, despite all their cash, seem to have cast themselves in the roll of annual underachievers, while Stoke supports must be wondering what has happened to Beattie’s form after he helped them secure Premier League survival in impressive fashion last season. Contrary to the situation at Loftus road, it seems that in the Potters’ case it is the player’s future that hangs in the balance.
While there is no suggestion that Beattie did anything wrong, some reports have suggested that the incident has left him understandably unhappy. This could mean the player looks to move on in January, just a year after joining Stoke in the first place. While this Potters fan’s Premier League blog suggests that Beattie won’t stop banging the goals in, it could be for another team. As a Hull City fan, I’ll be pleased with any turn of events that drags another team down into a relegation dog fight and I wouldn’t be too unhappy to see Beattie leading the line at the KC stadium come the new year either.
