Germany - Portugal Thoughts

First, what a great result for
Germany
! I watched the match at the gym, and ran and stairmastered the entire 90 minutes. Felt I should share in the exertion!
The first German goal was a thing of beauty. The quick touches and speed off of the ball were reminiscent of the last Russian effort. Schweinsteiger's finish was terrific.
The other two German goals were shockingly defended. Honestly, both were preventable. On the second, I have no idea what the Portuguese keeper was thinking about. Why didn't he just grab the ball, or punch it clear? He knew
Ballack
was a great finisher with his head. Regardless of the defensive lapses, Schweinsteiger's delivery on both headed goals was extremely precise. Perhaps more notable in a tournament that has featured poor set pieces.
I did not agree with Germany's overly defensive posture in the last 10-15 minutes. I understand perhaps one defensive substitution, but not two. It placed them under unnecessary duress. Clear long, and then hunker down for the next assault is a risky tactic. I think you still have to flow a little...make your opponent defend..
Is it just me or are Mertsaecker and Metzelder stiff and laboring defensively? They have slow feet and are getting turned fairly easily. Due to their height, they were effective when
Portugal
chose to play long balls into the box, but when the ball was played on the ground with speed...yikes..I was extremely apprehensive. To me, little Lahm has been the only defensive stalwart.
Oh..another thing..how about
Ronaldo
's acting job when he grabbed his foot screaming and rolling around when he was barely touched...it is why I cannot respect him...play like a man and not a prima donna. I'm not sad to see the end of his theatrics.
Germany have every chance now against
Croatia
or
Turkey
. Fingers crossed!

And it's true, the height of Germany was a huge factor in the match. Ronaldo does try to make a meal out of every bit of physical contact--disgraceful for such a good player. Reminded me of Koller the giant falling down and writhing in pain after getting pushed lightly by Volkan. Academy award!
