I am not sure what happened to the Crew team that lost 0-2 to the expansion San Jose Earthquakes at home last Saturday but this week's version of the Crew went on the road in K.C. and took the Wizards down the yellow brick road to the tune of 3-0.
The scoring opened in the third minute with the Crew Defensive MVP of the year so far, Chad Marshall, connecting on corner kick from Guillermo Barros Schelotto with a decisive header into the back of the net.  Then, in the nineteenth minute, KC keeper Kevin Hartman, in a somewhat strange play, tried to run down a ball towards the top of the box after a Danny O'Rourke cross, but was beat to it by Alejandro Moreno, who sent it into the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, the Crew finished off the home side with a GBS cross to the weak side of the box, hammered home by Moreno to beat Hartman to the near post, a fantastic strike.  3-0 in the sixty-seventh minute, and game, set, match.

NOTES:  Veteran Crew Midfielder and New Zealand International Duncan Oughton almost scored in his first start in two years, he had a great chance late that was saved when Jimmy Conrad caught up to him from behind  during an "in the box" breakaway and it was cleared before he could get a shot off....GBS looked better than he has all year, his corner kick early matched the run of Marshall perfectly...KC is playing in some kind of very small baseball stadium located in the Kansas-side of Kansas City until their new soccer-only stadium is ready in a couple of years. The play was very fast-paced.  The Crew could have scored a couple of more goal, and KC didn't create many chances in the match.  The young Crew back line (Iro, O'Rourke, Marshall, Junge, and later Zayner) were very solid.  Ekpo played very well, Rogers look good at times (very active) and Moreno looked bigger on a smaller field (with apologies to Tim Vickery, he has a very low center of gravity).  Why isn't Jimmy Conrad with the U.S. National Team?  Despite KC getting thumped, he looked pretty good.  Remember how much better the U.S. defense looked in the last World Cup when Bruce Arena finally substitued his Unversity of Virginia homer (and way too old and slow) defender Eddie Pope with Conrad?  Instant improvement!  Thank God for ONN taking the rest of the Crew games this year when CSN went belly-up last week.  Otherwise, this blog wouldn't exist.

As I am writing, I am watching the LA Galaxy at the San Jose Earthquakes.   Former Crew Forward Edson Buddle just volleyed in a goal for the LA Galaxy.  Beckham starts the play by lofting it to the top of the box, where it's headed out for a drop pass, and Buddle meets it with powerful volley.  Remember that other guy named Edson?

I'm curious to see if Sigi can be flexible now, and let some of the fresher legs start. I don't ever want to see Ezra Hendrickson start again (with due apologies). I like what I see from Iro, and when Frankie returns from national team duty the backline should be extremely solid. And who knows what Gino Padula will bring upon his return. What were your impressions of Ekpo who played in Gaven's absence. From what I've seen, I think Ekpo could end up permanently taking Gaven's place. More creativity than Eddie.

I am not a fan of the stadium the Wizards are playing in this year. It's a minor league baseball stadium that can awkwardly but barely fit a soccer pitch. I sat in the Cauldron for the first half of the Crew game and met some friends in the owner's box (it's actually right on the field) for the second half so I got to see the field from both sides. It's in good condition, but with the pitcher's mound a mere 5 feet from the sideline it the ball takes a hard bounce off of the neatly manicured grass. Bottom line, it's a place to play so I'm thankful for that...but I wonder why they quit playing at Arrowhead Stadium?
