England v Croatia - Deadly Defoe Must Start

England
prepare to do battle with
Croatia
in the World Cup Qualifying match on Wednesday, and
Fabio
Capello needs to take the only "gamble" that he would be forgiven for taking should things go wrong.
Tottenham
striker
Jermain Defoe
must start. The little Spurs forward tops the Premier League goalscoring charts and has been in sizzling form for the national side in the team's last two friendlies, scoring twice against Holland and once more against
Slovenia
. Even though Defoe's started both of those matches as a substitute, he has surely done enough to warrant himself a starting place against
Slaven Bilic
's men.

England 2-1 Slovenia - Jermain Defoe Goal
However, Capello may be tempted to stick with his "tried-and-tested" partnership of Heskey and
Rooney
, and pundits have asserted that the movement of the England players is generally better with Heskey leading the line. The Aston
Villa
forward's performances for the national side have been impressive of late, especially in England's 4-1 demolition of Croatia last time round. However, I am a staunch advocate of rewarding player form, and if Capello were to pick his side on the basis of form alone, Defoe would and should be the first name on the list.
Advocates of Heskey will point to Defoe's impact as a substitute, and Heskey's working relationship with
Manchester United
Wayne Rooney, but the question remains whether that is enough justification to start with a player who can't even get selected for his club.
Also pushing for a starting place will be fellow Tottenham team-mate Aaron Lennon, who combined with Defoe to set-up the striker for the goal against Slovenia, and who has also been in good form for his club side.
England go into the match knowing that a win or a draw will guarantee the team qualification for the World Cup in
South Africa
. However, should Croatia emerge victorious, it would provide for an exciting run-in to see who grabs the automatic qualification spot, and who will have to battle it out in the play-offs.
Pre-match Questions:
What is England's
ideal
starting line-up?
Who should lead the attack?
Should Gerrard continue to play out on the left?
What are your predictions?

Too true Ted, if football talks Defoe should definately start- Villa have an English strike-force and Heskey warms the bench so how he starts for England i have no Idea!

even if we win (I don't think we will, but I hope for a draw), we still can't catch up with England. It would still be a battle between Croatia and Ukraine for the play-offs, so you guys are definetly going straight to South Africa. however, I don't think Capello will let Heskey play, he will probably go for Walcott.

I still don't get why Heskey plays, in 9 years he has only scored 44 league goals. You know he will not score in most matches, so why play him just for aerial balls?

I'm slightly apprehensive- With Man Utd on sunday I don't want Defoe comprised in any way by playing 3 games in a week. I'm happy that he is doing well on a personal level but we need to be winning games against the likes of Man U at home if we want to stand a good chance of not mucking up again this year. Without Modric + Defoe our chances would be quite affected.

Heskey has been a luggage for a while...At best he is gonna win some high balls ..he is not a goal poacher and doesn't have the speed to be play upfront....DeFoe should start given his current run of form... The real challenge is about the third striker, who should be an impact player who can turn the game coming of the bench... I would like to see England go with a 4-2-2-2 with Rooney and Defoe upfront - Lampard and Lennon at attacking midfield- Barry and Gerrard pulling strings

I can't understand why Heskey's in the side in the first place. Defoe should be first choice. I would rather have Owen playing than Heskey. No disrespect to the guy but, useless comes to mind. I don't think 4,2,2,2 would work sounds a bit narrow, 3,5,2 maybe?

I hope England will get revenge for previous defeat from Croatia on home turf. Although I do admire the Croats for being so tuff all these years, I hope Serbia will be like them and beat France tomorrow, I'll be on the stadium watching it live :)))

The game is coming up! woohooo! great feedback from all...I guess there really isn't a logical reason to start with Heskey, but with all the pre-match talk, there shouldn't be any surprise is Defoe starts on the bench (come on Capello...get things right!). @Cityturk - if Capello decided to go for pace on the wings, then the 3-5-2 would probably be the best option. Everyone ready?!?

nah. England will not have an easy match. you're lucky our good players Modric and Corluka won't play. still, if we qualify, Modric's injury isn't as bad as Eduardo's (lucky for you, Dan, he'll be able to play for Tottenham by the end of the year) . He should (read: will) play at the WC if Croatia qualifies

5-1 wow. Dan you got a contender team for next year. not only did Capello shut Bilic, English players perform much better than their usual EPL standards. everyone was good

Defoe should start instead of Heskey any day, i am not sure why Heskey is in the England squad, too old, too slow and is not even playing for his own team. Defoe is very confident recently and that is what you need in a striker

England has never based their squad on current form, so don't expect it to change anytime soon.
