Danny Boy breathes life into Palace

Danny Butterfield's six-minute hat-trick not only dumped Premier League Wolves out of the FA Cup on Tuesday night but also threw crisis club Crystal Palace a lifeline.

The Championship outfit are in administration and the players only received their January wages hours before the 3-1 fourth round replay win.

Neil Warnock's men put in a spirited performance and the betting odds FA Cup bookmakers are offering make them 50/1 to win the cup outright.

Their reward for beating Wolves is a fifth round date at Selhurst Park with Aston Villa.

The Valentine's Day visit from the Midlanders could net cash-stricken Palace around £400,000 and may persuade potential investors to step forward and purchase the club from Simon Jordan.

There was nothing beleaguered about Warnock's men though on Tuesday as Butterfield, a full-back by trade, was thrown forward to partner Alan Lee and came up trumps with a second-half treble.

Forget Victor Moses, who was sold to Wigan on transfer deadline day, Butterfield showed a real goalscorer's instinct as Wolves were swept aside.

And with Palace's play-off hopes dented by the ten-point deduction for going into administration, the side will be relishing a fifth-round date with Villa - the tournament's third favourites at 6/1.

Warnock said: "I feel sorry for Simon (Jordan). He's tried and tried to sell the club. There are not many supporters like him, prepared to throw away £25-35million.

"He's not coming to games at the moment - I don't know why. I told him he could sit on the bench and no-one would notice him.

"One or two people blame him for the ten-point deduction but if anyone is going to blame him it should be me for losing ten points when I thought we could go up. But I don't blame him at all, I know how hard he has worked.

"So hopefully now someone else will come in. There is excitement here now.

"We're going back to basics. No prima donnas, none of the stories you see on the front pages these days. This is real football."

Although Palace are unlikely to feature in the FA Cup Final betting odds, they will doubtlessly put in a good performance against Villa.
