Lorik Cana on move to Emirates? Lucho joining Marseille for big money could free up the move..........
Por Daniel Perry
I have heard through various contacts recently that Arsene Wenger has a experienced DM his priority now he has recruited Thomas Vermaelen. Although the CB situation is not completely resolved as there remains the possibility of either Toure or Gallas moving on along with Senderos of course, and wengers decision regarding whether Alex Song features more at CB this season could also affect this conclusion.
Moving on to the DM situation which many feel could well be the final piece of the jigsaw to erase those 'fine margins' which were clearly evident in the two crunch games last season(Chelsea FA Cup semi and Man Utd CL Semi-final). Whilst many observers initially looked closer to home at the likes of Gareth Barry, Scott Parker, they were never really part of Wengers thinking particlarly the latter.
Of Course after Barry's well publicised and to a degree well scrutinised switch to eastlands, the search casts its eye further afield in search of this 'missing piece'.
Neutrals declared they have found their man in Felipe Melo, the brazilan fellow chief destroyer with ex gunners legend Gilberto Silva, who added fuel to the fire in publically advising the fiorentina and ex-almeria midfield enforcer to jet in to the emirates. However despite his impressive performances and progress not just over the confeds cup but over the last two/three years as a whole, his disciplinary was enough beef for wenger to not let his head turn.
Wenger has more confidence in place with someone who he has seen first hand with a previous trial, knows personally, have upbeat reviews drummed into him and probably feels the time is right to make this move for both parties. The player in question is Lorik Cana marseille, a strong breeded, energetic, charismatic central midfielder with height, experience of not only CL football but the pressure which constrains a big club, also edearning hisself to the fans for his leadership qualities(which has also been mentioned for the aforementioned Thomas Vermaelen coincidentally)
Marseille have reportedly agreed a deal to take Lucho Gonzalez to the Stade Veledrome for a figure reported to be in the 17m Euros bracket. There is no smoke without fire on this one as part of being part of a recoup in the face of Cana, who i have been told could be on the move for as much as £12m plus with maybe Emmanuel Eboue chucked in too as a sweetener. Watch this space, this could be a coup if there was ever was one.........

As an Arsenal fan, i would not be overly happy if we acquired Cana. He isn't the best passer of the ball, and yes he does go into crunching tackles, but in a fluid passing game that Arsenal employ, they need a clean tackler, one who wins the ball in one go and moves it on, a few goals at Marseille have come from his tackling making the ball loose. There are far far far better options to Cana like Rio Mavuba-Alou Diarra-out of contract Benoit Pedretti who is not as mobile but a clean tackler and excellent passer of the ball- Yohan Cabaye a better passer and tackler and compressor of space. The crown jewel of course is Toulalan, but he will cost over €24m, but if Arsenal have the cash, he is an elite performer.

I think Cana is exactly what we need- a destroyer w/experience who will dominate the midfield & allow Cesc to roam & conjure up his magic. We have enough suave players. His physical & psychological presence will make up for his less Arsenal-style distribution (which is not bad- just average), and IMHO will add a badly needed extra dimension of steel, bite & aggression to our game. This also will provide serious competition for the partner of Cesc for Song (Denilson is no good), & Im hoping Lansbury will be the young gun pushing for a spot maybe too...

You also have to read into the fact that one of the best players in that position over the last 15 years, Deschamps is willing to let him go, if a great exponent doesn't want him, it says something. Also a shame as Marseille have targeted M'Bia as his replacement, he is a better holding player than Cana, Song and M'Bia have a good understanding at international level, the former dictates the play and finds the passes, the latter does the cleaning up and gives the first ball with quality. I am not a fan of Cana.

I'd be very happy if Cana came to the Emirates - He'd fit right in, and as mentioned be a very good couple with Cesc. Deschamps has made the mistake of this season by letting Cana go - Now I hope Wenger uses his French ties to seal the deal.

Sorry that i have not been able to comment on my own blog(poor show i admit haha) as i have been away. Well certainly seems a mixed response. Obviously since this blog was done Felipe Melo has gone to Juventus, and Adebayor has joined the revolution at Eastlands, posing the majority of gooners to focus on who a new striker could well be, with Chamackh being the only real possibility at the moment! Of course i am in agreement that Adebayor does need to be replaced, i hope it does not deter from the long standing priority that one more piece is missing from the core of the team. Vermaelen looks a good buy who enhances our backline and adds that bit more steel and agression to what we have. So thats the CB situation done, as it also seems that AW could be tempted to give Song more games at CB this season where he has always slotted in well, probably more naturally than CM! And of course the CM situation is still one which needs one more in my opinion, nothing has really been mentioned regarding Cana. There may be reasons for that (one of course whether or not the tip-off i received is true or not) but judging by the mixed reviews/opinions its difficult to say whether it will be good or not. One thing is for sure though, theres not many sufficient players to fill that hole out there, and the clock is ticking....
