United win another trophy, Rooney grabs the headlines...but what about Owen and Berbatov ??
Por Rohit Arvind Mishra
Rooney's superb header won the Carling Cup for the second year running for United, but shouldn't a thought be spared for those who had leveled the tie before Rooney came along ? The front two of Owen and Berbatov, perhaps the most maligned strikers anywhere across the top teams in Europe, gave United a foot back into the final well before Rooney came onto the scene. And what is their reward ? Berbatov is described as "finally playing somewhere close to a level which justifies his 30 million pound price tag", and Owen comes into the papers for "England hopes all but gone", and "Yet another injury". Seriously ?

Rooney has been a revelation this season, but both of them have contributed to United's season as well. In fact, for all of Valencia's superb crossing and Nani's bag of tricks, if there's a player who can cause problems through passes along the ground through sheer vision and creativity, its Berbatov, apart from Scholes, of course. Honestly, we should be thankful we have such a selfless striker in our ranks who provides so much creativity and cutting edge to the cutting blade which is Rooney, without looking for glory himself. I mean, come on, he's Bulgaria's captain, their record goal-scorer, the man who has often dragged them through competitions single handedly, and he's always been humble and thankful he gets to play at United. Imagine Berbatov in Barcelona, as the spearhead. If it had happened to be Berbatov instead of Eto'o for Barcelona in the CL final, losing by 3 or more goals wouldn't have been a surprise. Instead, people go on about him not working hard or not running himself into the ground. I mean, why should he ? Isn't it enough that he keeps creating chances for an entire match ? Why have United resorted to the 4-4-2 recently ? Its because of him alone. Out of Rooney's five headed goals on the trot, the last three have come from Valencia's cross, but Berbatov supplied the pass for Valencia to run onto each time. He's basically got 3 quasi-assists to those goals. That's why people are now talking about the Berbatov-Valencia-Rooney-Goal combination as the most lethal setup this season for United. Who does it start from ? Correct, its Dimitar Berbatov. And yet, when people compared him to Cantona, while they were right in saying he could have the same dramatic effect at times, which he does, where they went wrong was where Cantona was, justifiably, arrogance personified, Berbatov's arrogance can be seen only from the tricks and passes he pulls out of his hat with nothing more than a shrug, and yet, he's been humble and aware of his shortcomings, and working on them. Appreciate the guy for that, at least. Not everybody with his talent does that. And just in case you forget, he's playing with a long standing knee injury which is going to need an operation in the summer. He has delayed it so that he does not miss the crucial end of season games for United.

And when you're talking of talent, while Rooney maybe the current "White hope", the original is still in the United dressing room with him, keeping a low-key personality for the most part. Michael Owen might not like the headlines too much these days, considering all the papers talk about him is how he won't be able to go to the World Cup with England, but, in truth, the headlines do like him. Because he is gradually forcing his way back into the papers, and for the right reasons. A free transfer from Newcastle after three injury marred seasons, Owen was a surprise pick by United for many, to say the least, but not for me, and I had said it way back in August that he could be one of the signings of the season. While having not played in too many games, his impact has been felt, nevertheless. A historic winner in the Manchester derby, a brace in the League Cup followed by an assist to Diouf in the next round, a hat-trick against Wolfsburg, and a priceless leveler in the League Cup final, I mean, he still is one of the best impact players you can get from the bench. Finally hit by a hamstring injury, Owen had shown enough in his last game that even without Rooney, he, along with Berbatov, would've been enough for most teams this season. He would be out for a few weeks, but he will only return stronger. He knows this is his last big club, and whether he goes to the World Cup or not, his last shot at winning major trophies such as the Premier League or the Champions' League. Doubting the ability and motivation of a striker who has "ice flowing in his veins" in such a situation is not something most people should do. Here's to hoping that Michael Owen does turn out to be the signing of the season.

And a prayer that he and Berbatov be recognized by United fans for who they are - people who give their best for United every time they put on the iconic, timeless jersey of the Red Devils. Let's all hope that we'd all join in the celebrations when those two, along with United, would lift the other two trophies left to win. Circa 1999. The Treble starts now.
