Penalty Kicks :

Nobody understands the principle behind penalty areas. When someone is fouled a foot inside the penalty area, it's not really any different than if they're fouled a foot outside the box. The point of a penalty area is to give a very good chance for a team to score if they've been denied a clear goal scoring opportunity by foul play from the other team. The penalty area is used for convenience more than anything but now you have people analysing replays to check whether a foul was just in or outside the box. This is pointless. The foul either denied a clear goal scoring opportunity or it didn't. Whether it was just in or out the box is a ridiculous little distinction that is made because people are a bit dim.

Here's another example, imagine a player running clear through on goal. Defender hacks him down just outside the center circle. Red card for the defender, free kick for the attacking team. This has denied a clear goalscoring opportunity just as much as if he'd done it inside the area but obviously wouldn't be given as a penalty.

I dunno if I'd really advocate changing it and making it a subjective decision about whether or not a goal-scoring opportunity had been denied but giving a penalty purely on the location of the foul seems less sensible i guess, even if its more practical.

interesting points, but i think it would be a little crazy to award a penalty for a foul committed in the center circle, even if the player was through on goal! not everything in the game is logical, and not every rule is followed to the letter of the law - i for some reason get really frustrated when goalkeepers hold onto the ball for more than 6 seconds, and the fact that half the throw-ins taken seem to be foul throws. but that's the game hey?! ;-)

I am afraid you have answered your own question. Like it or not, the penalty area makes things objective - it shouldn't be the call of the referee if it was a clear goalscoring opportunity, or not.

yeah, these are the silly things. but they make football so much fun. i dont think we should turn it into a kind of basketball, where touching opponents is almost tabboo. let tall men dance ballet, and big bullies do rugby. the average athletes can opt to dribble past tackling defenders and win a penalty if they get far enough.
