Nobody understands the principle behind penalty areas. When someone is fouled a foot inside the penalty area, it's not really any different than if they're fouled a foot outside the box. The point of a penalty area is to give a very good chance for a team to score if they've been denied a clear goal scoring opportunity by foul play from the other team. The penalty area is used for convenience more than anything but now you have people analysing replays to check whether a foul was just in or outside the box. This is pointless. The foul either denied a clear goal scoring opportunity or it didn't. Whether it was just in or out the box is a ridiculous little distinction that is made because people are a bit dim.
Here's another example, imagine a player running clear through on goal. Defender hacks him down just outside the center circle. Red card for the defender, free kick for the attacking team. This has denied a clear goalscoring opportunity just as much as if he'd done it inside the area but obviously wouldn't be given as a penalty.
