newton heath L & YR football shirtIn 1902 Manchester United neared bankruptcy, with debts of over £2,500. At one point, their Bank Street ground was even closed by the bailiffs.

Just before having to be shut down for good, the club received a sizeable investment from J. H. Davies, the managing director of Manchester Breweries.

Legend goes that Harry Stafford, the club captain, was showing off his prized St. Bernard dog at a club fund-raiser, when Davies approached him to buy the dog.

Stafford declined, but was able to persuade Davies to invest in the club and become club chairman.

It was decided at one of the early board meetings that the club required a change of name to reflect the fresh start they had been afforded. Manchester Central and Manchester Celtic were among the names suggested, before Louis Rocca, a young immigrant from Italy, said "Gentlemen, why don't we call ourselves Manchester United?"

The name stuck, and Manchester United officially came into existence on 26 April 1902. Davies also decided it would be appropriate to change the club's colours, abandoning the green and gold halves of Newton Heath, and picking red and white to be the colours of Manchester United.

@ Sam - I think there are far too many wannabe fans of Manchester United, Liverpool, Chelsea etc etc who love the glory but know nothing oif the real history and beautiful past of their clubs. They should know these things if they wish to be taken seriously as fans I think.

@carly... there are crazy fans(guys who think all other teams are shit),there are 'fake' fans(support us only when we win or when we've got their fav. player) and then, there are loyal fans(always red, always united, but never disrespectful to other clubs)... its not that i dint know bout this, just that its written quite well... now that ronaldo's gone, we will lose many of our fake fans, and thats a good thing, coz the last time i went out for a coffee on a sunday morning with my neighbour's daughter, i found out that she is supposedly a red 'demon'(lol!) and she cant name any other player in man utd other than ronaldo.(allegedly, ronaldo was our keeper, striker, midfielder, manager, waterboy etc...) in the end, these fans detoriate the views of others towards the club's fanbase... i'm happy now that her heart is with ronnie in madrid...good riddance?hell yeah!
