African Cup of Nations
Por Alex Carlton
After the terrible news of last nights shootings of the Togo team bus in Cabinda the main question on everyone's lips is; Should the Tournament be scrapped?

In many peoples eyes it would be viewed to be handing victory to terrorism. In my view it would be deemed victory for Football against FIFA.

It is now been obvious to me for a long time that the much controversial FIFA chief, Sepp Blatter has only been able to hang onto his position due to having the powers of the African Nations in his pocket. One day he promised these people he would give them the World stage should they stick by him. To there credit they have, but surely with the ripe trouble in Angola and the debate about the policing & safety in South Africa it has to be a doubt if these countries need such Tournaments. If events go trouble free then it would do wonders for their economy and World relations, however a Football team bus being machine gunned by terrorists a week before the Tournament starts isn't going to go down well.

Fair play to Togo for pulling out and my heart-felt condolonses go out to those injured and that have had their lives cut short, but these problems were sure to re-surface. My only hope now is that the big Nations in this Tournament, Ivory Coast & Ghana also lead by example and pull out and put Mr Blatter back in the hot seat.

hi, Alex, nice to hear from you again. fair play Togo for going thus far. we should pay our respects (my condolenses to Kodjovi and his team), but it should be OK to continue, even if that means Angola winning it without playing a single match. we cant say SA is uncapable just because Angola slipped. however, its should be players who decide. its their lives we're talking about. anyway, kudos to you for stating your timely opinion. cheers!

Condolences to those that have died from this attack, big blow for the whole of Togo, and probably even more for Angola, more reason for the state to be more heavy handed and use of the military. Not sure what effect an abandonment of this tournament would have for Blatter or Fifa. CAF, the body that runs African football is getting pillored so much for awarding this tournament to Angola, but I think it was a good thing to do. If smaller nations never get awarded such tournaments, how will they ever progress, 10 years ago, the notion of Angola-Togo-Senegal getting to the World Cup would have been laughed at, but because CAF has take this tournament around and invested a lot in football, they have been able to do it. South Africa is a totally different country to Angola, I don't expect such ambushes, there may be thefts of players possesions, but nothing like what happened at the Munich Olympics where athletes were murdered. If developing countries aren't given the opportunity to host these things, how can they ever improve? Angola has had a big tragedy on its soil, now they can prevent it happening again, and probably better yet, get a full settlement with the rebels who may give trouble to those that live in the province. If more AU and UN support is given to finding a deal in that province from this incident, it won't be an incident that has been futile. I prefer all tournaments to go ahead, more people want to watch the football than those that want this project to fail.

Firslty, also, condolences to those who suffered. Some great perspectives and while I do think the tournament should go ahead (should nothing else happen), it does raise some concerns for me about SA2010. Right now, they are saying the Togo players want to play, but their Government is pulling them out... interesting turn of events.

Obviously it goes without saying that I send my condolences to the dead and their families. I can't agree though with the tournament being scrapped as terrorism is a problem that can plague any nation in the world, let us not forget the day after we were handed the 2012 olympics we suffered our own barbaric act of terrorism. Did the world turn around and condem us and fear for their safety? In my opinion we all have a duty to stand up to the terrorists and continue with our daily lives other wise we may as well never leave the house. There are many questions that need to be asked surrounding the security but you cant compare SA with Angola the only comparison they share is being on the same continent. If war broke out in Kosovo again would we cancel the Europen Championships or the World Cup? When the IRA bombed London or Manchester did we scrap all sporting events? We must all stand together in the wars on Terror where ever they maybe and look to the causes as, as much as we all hate to admit it the only way to stop it is to look at ourselves and our goverments.
