Glossary of terms used in playing FOOTBALL :

A >
* Alley - an open space between the 2 players.

* Attacker - the player with possesion of the ball. >note: front running attackers are usually called Strikers or Wingers.

B>
* Backs -{ also known as fullbacks } - players closest to the Goalie whose primary function is generally for defense.

* Ball control factor - the tactical consideration that younger and less-skilled teams have more turnovers than the higher-skilled teams.

* Ball watching - as a defender, focusing solely on the ball and losing sight of the opponent being marked ; a common error among inexperienced player.

* Balance in defense - positioning of  defensive players that provides depth and support. note: players nearest the ball mark opponents while those away from the ball position to cover space.

*  Baseball throw - a method used by goal keeper to toss the ball over medium distance.

* Blindside run - a type of running off-the-ball in which a player without the ball runs outside the of the opponent's field of vision inorder to recieve a pass.

* Blind side - the side away from a player's field of vision.

* Block tackle - a defensive skill used to gain possession of the ball ;the player uses the inside of the foot to block the ball away from an opponent.

* Breakaway - a situation where an attacker with the ball breaks free of defenders and creates a 1 versus 1 situation with the Goalkeeper.

* Catenaccio - a strong defensive system  employing a free-back = ( libero )

* Center-foward - { also known as Striker } - the forward usually positioned closest to the opponents' goal whose job is to score goals. a front-running forward positioned in the Central area of the field usually one Of  the primary goal scorers of the team.

* Centering - flanking a ball into the shooting area.

* Clearing - moving the ball out of the shooting area.

* Combination - an offensive play made by 2 or more players using short passes.

* Concentration in defense - positioning of defensive players to limit the space availability to opponents in the most critical scoring areas.

* Counter attack - the initiation of an attack on the opposing Goal upon gaining possession of the ball.

* Covering - { also known as Cover } - a defensive support providing back-up for a team mate in a defensive way. as a defender challenges for possession of the ball He should be supported from behind ( = covered ) by a teammate.

* Cross - a pass originating from the wing or flank area that is driven across the goal mouth.

* Cushioning - the defensive technique of moving with an attacker while staying in between him and the goal.

* Corner kick - a free kick taken by the offensive team from the corner area after the ball has gone out of bounds over the goal line and it was last touched by a defensive player.

* Danger area - the area from the the defender's point of view immediately in front of the goal which the ball must 1st penetrate before a goal can be scored.

* Decoy running - like running without the ball in order to draw a defender away from some potential area of attack.

* Defenders - a term used to label the Players positioned nearest to the Goalkeeper. >note: most modern systems of  play uses 4 defenders.

* Depth - a proper support positioning of the team both in attack and defense.
 
* Diagonal run - designed to penetrate the defense while while drawing defenders away from central positions.

* Direct kick - a free kick awarded for a major violation which can be shot directly into the goal without 1st touching another player.

* Double pass - (also known as Wall pass / give-and-go ) - a short offensive  combination play which takes the ball past a defender. a combination pass with one player passing to a nearby teammate and then sprinting forward to recieved a return pass.

* Dribbling - moving the ball under control with the players feet.

E-F>
* Economical training - incorporating physical fitness,skills and tactics into each drill or Exercise to make maximum use of practice time.

* Far post - the goal post farthest from the ball.

* Feinting - making a deceptive movement in order to dribble the ball by an opponent.

* First-timing - shooting or passing the ball without 1st dribbling or stopping it.

* Flanks - areas in the field near the touchlines that provide a narrow shooting angle to Goal.

* Flex-system - a game strategy for effectively positioning and playing younger or amateur players.

* Forwards - players whose function is generally more offensive than defensive occupying the front attacking positions ; usually identified as Strikers and Wingers.

* Freeback - { also known as Libero = sweeper }- the defensive player as used by many higher-skilled or defense-oriented teams whose primary job is to provide cover for teammates.

* Fullbacks - see: Backs

* Full volley - striking the ball directly out of the air. this is most commonly done with the instep of the foot.

* Function training - isolating for practice the techniques and tactics of specific player positions such as the skill used by a Striker in recieving the ball when under pressure of an opponent.

* Garbage - balls muffed by the Goalie or a defender or bouncing off a post or crossbar which can be re-played by players following-up an attack.

* Give-and-go - see: Double pass

* Goal area - the smaller rectangle immediately in front of the goal from which a goal kicks are taken.

* Goal side position - defending Player positioned between his Goal and the opponent to be marked.

* Goal kick - a free kick taken from the goal area by the defensive team after the ball has gone out of bounds over the goal line and was last touched by the offensive team.

* Goal line - the line bounding each long long end of the field.

* Grid - a confined area in which a small group of players practices skills and tactics.

* Halfbacks - see: Mid-fielders

* Heading - shooting or passing the ball with the head.

* Indirect free kick - a free kick  awarded for a minor violation which can not be shot directly into the goal without a 2nd man touching the ball.

L - M -N >
* Libero - see: Freebacks

* Linkman - see: Mid-Fielders

* Man in the hole - the imaginary target goal shooters are encouraged to aim for in attempt to keep the ball from sailing high over the goal.

* Marking - tight coverage of an opponent.

* Mid-Fielders - { also known as halfbacks ot link men }- players positioned mostly in the center of the field with both offensive and defensive functions.

* Mobility - movement both with and without the ball designed to create space for teammates by drawing opponents into unfavorable positions.

* Near post - the goal post nearest the ball.

O - P - R >
* Offside - a violation which might occur unless there are 2 or more opponents between a player and the goal the moment the ball is passed forward.

* Offside trap - the act of defenders moving up in a line that is known as Offside chain.. to a place forwards in an offside position.

* Offside rule - a player must have 2 opponents, including the Goalkeeper, between himself and the opposing goal at the moment the ball is played. Otherwise,He's offside and is being penalized by an indirect free kick awarded to the opposing team.Players cannot be offside if they are positioned in their own half of the Field if the ball was last played by an opponent or if they recieved the ball directly from a corner kick, throw-in, goal kick or drop ball.

* One-on-one defense - a system in which player is held resonsible for marking a specific opponent.

* One touch passing - interpassing among teammates without stopping the ball also known as 1st-time passing.

* Overlap - a method in which a supporting teammates runs from behind to a position ahead of the player with the ball ;often used as a tactic to move defenders and mid-fielders into attacking positions.

* Penalty area - the larger rectangle in front of the goal  approximately 16 x 40 meters - in which the Goalie may play the ball with his hands.

* Penalty kick - a direct free kick taken 11 meters from the goal which is awarded when an opponent commit a major foul inhis own penalty area.

* Poke tackle - a method in which a player reaches in and uses the toes to poke the ball away from an opponent.

* Ready postion - the Goalkeeper's basic stance when the ball is within shooting shooting range of the goal.

* Recieving - the technique of arresting the ball.

* Restart - a method Of initiating play after a stop in the action. this includes direct and indirect free kicks, throw-ins, corner kicks, goal kicks and drop ball.

* Running-of-the-ball - movement of a player without the ball that creates passing and scoring opportunities for tean\mmates.

* Screening - the defensive task of mid-fielders in keeping the ball out of the shooting area.

* Shielding - positioning one's body between the opponent and the ball to maintain possession.

* Shooting - kicking or heading the ball toward the goal post in an attempt to score.

* Shooting area - the area into which the offensive team must 1st penetrate with the ball before a goal can be scored.

* Shoulder charge - a legal tactic used when challenging an opponent for the ball when the ball is within playing distance.

* Slide tackle - a method in which a player slides and kicks the ball away from an opponen.

* Stopper - { also known as Vorstopper } - the defender who plays ahead of the free-back in a system using a freeback.

* Stopper back - a central defender positioned in front of the sweeper back who usually marks the opposing Center striker.

* Striker - see: Center-Forward

* Strong-line - the tactical placement of the better players in positions dominating
the lengthwise center of the field.

* Support - movement of players into positions that provide passing option for the teammate with the ball.

* Sweeper - see: also Freeback

* Sweeper back - the last field player in defense who provides cover for the marking defenders.

* System - a strategy or guide in positioning players on the field.

* System of play - organization and responsibilities of the 10 field  players.

* Tactics - organizational concept on individual, group or team basis of player roles within the team structure.

* Tackling - using the feet to take the ball  to the opponent.

* Techniques - game skills which includes passing and recieving, heading, dribbling, shooting and shielding.

* Throw-in - the method of throwing the ball back into the field  and putting it back Into play after it has crossed over the touch line. the ball must be held with 2 hands and released directly the path of the ball. both feet must be touching the ground when the ball is released.

* Touch line - the line bounding each long side of the field.

* Trapping - a method of recieving the ball using the feet.

* Turnover - losing possesion of the ball to the opponent.

* Two-touch passing - type of interpassing in which the recievingplayer controls the ball with the 1st touch and passes to a teammate on the second.

* Volley - a kick taken by players when the ball is in the air

* Vorrstopper - see: also Stopper

* Wall - a human barrier between the goal and the ball measuring 9 meters from the ball

* Wall pass - see also Double pass:

* Width in attack - using the width of the field in an attempt to draw defending players away from Central positions. the objective is to create space in the most dangerous attacking zones.

* Wings - an outside forwards

* Wingbacks - defenders positioned on the flanks who usually mark the opposing wing forwards.

* Winger - a front-running forward positioned in the flank area near the touchline.

* W M-System - a 3-2-5 or 3-4-3 sysyem which gives the appearance of W in the offense and M in the defense.

Z >
Zonal defense - sysytem In which each player is held responsible for defending a certain area of the field.

nice blg! interesting idea! but F footbo is really mising ;)...and another thing f fans...one of the most important factors of soccer, and we all know that liverpool has the best fans...
