The end is near: What the Premier League final standings 08/09 will look like
Por Benno Hansen
It's spring and Europe's leagues are finishing. My statistically inclined inner geek and my computer have taken a look at the standings. Here's what we can predict for the English Premier League which is farthest in it's progress as 329 of 380 matches has been played.

Four teams define the top: Defending champions Manchester United (currently 74 points, finishing at about 85) are steering for another title but right behind them Liverpool (unbeaten at Anfield, to finish about 81) will be ready to take advantage of any stumble. Placed 3rd is Chelsea (will get about 77 points), 4th Arsenal (corrected a substandard league beginning with currently 19 games without losing, will finish at approx. 70 points). Perhaps Chelsea will overtake the silver spot but my guess is the standing will go unchanged.

These four teams are also the ones going into next season's Champions League. And three of them are still in this year's! Aston Villa (did very well this season but are currently at eight games without winning) and Everton will take 5th and 6th positions and qualify for next year's UEFA Cup.

Everything is a bit like last season.

West Bromwich Albion
will relegate. So will probably both Middlesbrough FC and Newcastle United FC. But Hull City, Blackburn Rovers and Sunderland currently have only from three to five points more than those teams so the fat lady isn't singing yet.

Top scorer will bea Nicolas Anelka, Cristiano Ronaldo or Fernando Torres.
