After a preseason that saw huge victories over teams such as AC Milan, UEFA Cup champions Shakhtar, Premier League side Sunderland, and Amsterdam giants Ajax, the encarnados are looking for big things in the 09/10 championship campaign.  The eagles will kick off the campaign on Sunday against Madeira side Maritimo.
Benfica will look to continue their preseason goal-scoring form, as the goals came in bunches during the friendlies.  Spearheading the attack will be Oscar Cardozo and ex-Real Madrid player Javier Saviola.  Benfica will also have the options of Keirrison, the Brazilian wunderkind, and speedy playmaker Weldon off the bench.
Much of Benfica's early season success, however, will depend on its defense.  After Maxi Pereira went down with a knee injury and was forced to undergo surgery, coach Jorge Jesus has struggled to find a suitable replacement for the right back.  For tomorrow's game against Maritimo, Jesus has called up Luisao, David Luiz, Sidnei, and Shaffer to bear the burden of defensive duties.  It is also still a mystery as to who the Eagles' number 1 goalkeeper should be.  Moreira looked to be leading the race until Jesus signed Belenses keeper Julio Cesar, and then Quim had a legendary performance against Milan in the Eusebio Cup.  Jesus has called up Moreira and Quim for tomorrow's match, so it will be interesting to see who gets the nod.
Finally, my prediction... Benfica just too good to let this one slip away.  A game of many chances for Benfica and dominant midfield play.  Benfica 3-1 Maritimo.
FORCA BENFICA!
