USA : DARK HORSES or REAL CONTENDERS FOR 2010 WORLD CUP

1986 : failed to qualify for the world cup.
1990 : qualified, but lost all 3 games to czecoslavia, italy and austria.
1994 : being the host, automatically qualified.
in the group stages draw 1-1 with switzerland. 2-1 win over columbia, despite losing 1-0 to romania, made it  to knock out rounds(1st  tym since 1930. lost 1-0 to eventual champs brazil..

1998 : lost all 3 group matches,2-0 germany,1-2 iran n 0-1 yugoslavia.were 32 nd out of 32
.
2002 :The United States won the 2002 Gold Cup to set up the team's best performance since 1930...
in the 2002  World Cup, when the U.S. team reached the quarterfinals. The knockout stage was reached through a 3–2 win over Portugal and a 1–1 tie with co-host and eventual fourth place finisher, South Korea. This set the stage for a Round 2 face-off with familiar continental rivals Mexico. The U.S. emerged victorious in the first World Cup showdown between the two old adversaries, 2–0. The team lost 1–0 to eventual runners-up Germany in the quarterfinals.
The United States followed up this success by winning its third Gold Cup, and second out of three, in 2005.

2006: After finishing top of the CONCACAF qualification tournament, the U.S. was drawn into Group E along with the Czech Republic, Italy, and Ghana. Since three of the teams were ranked in the top 10 of the FIFA World Rankings at the time, it was considered a Group of Death.

The United States opened its tournament with a 0–3 loss to the Czech Republic. The team then drew 1–1 against Italy, the only game which the Italians failed to win before the tournament final against France. The United States was then knocked out of the tournament when beaten 2–1 by Ghana in its final group match.
..now a lot has changed, for startes coach, bruce arena was replaced by Bob Bradley, whose reign began with four wins and one draw in friendlies leading up to the 2007 Gold Cup, hosted by the United States
.
and also a lot of american talent ,both young n established, r playing in top european clubs, which is helps them to gain experience at the highest levels of club and international soccer than at any other time in the team's history..
and also the recent sucess of confedrations cup, where they reached the finals by defeating spain 2-0,but eventually lost to brazil 3-2...

remarkable performances by clint dempsey and langdon donovan..
makes me think usa has what it takes to lift the world cup,or reach the quater or semi finals of the competition..or will they be knocked out way before that.?

Good points Samir. Personally, i think the USA are taking steps forward, but at the elite level, it is very hard to compete with the established nations. For instance, Brazil-Italy-Germany will have the upper hand over the USA by history and know-how on how to win crunch matches. In some of the bigger clashes, the US kept sitting deeper and deeper, and they still do it it now, even against Mexico in the Confed Cup. That know-how on how to see a game out and control it is where the USA will need to improve if they are to start to compete at the elite level against the established nations.

usa in the semi, u gotta be kiddin me..ya they played fantastic football in the confed cup, but no not in the world cup.their are so many better teams, ok i agree dempsey n donovan were gr8. but what if 1 gets injured, they hve no back up, not enough depth in squad, just compare their squad with italy's squad or spain squad..you will know better.. may be they will make it throught the group stages but wont lasttill the quater finals.. maybe in 2014, but nothis year.

@Samir: maybe yes. They should be able to make it to the quarter finals, but not beyond. They did a good job at the COnfederations Cup, but we will need to see them against Brazil in a more competitive environment.
09.08.2009 11:31
ya exactly my point, u people are forgetting something, usa had a 2-0 lead, but they lost 3-2.this shows that thier squad were a lilttle inconsistant.n in the world cup with teams like germany, spain and italy, there is no room for error, you make a mistake against a world class team, you will conceed hence lose.

Hey Samir, great post and a really good question you are asking. I think the US will be a powerhouse in international football in a matter of years, but it might be too soon to expect success in the 2010 World Cup. First things first, they have to beat Mexico again ;-)

if we currently look at their performance in confed cup, i think that they have a slight around 40% chance of making it to the knockout stages

to let 2-0 lead slip even against Brazil in confed final is not sign of a prepared team. but they have all the potential to be dark horses, no more. IMO top 4 is absolutely real, but are they used to such occasion? sure they want to, but that kind of experience comes either through an influencial star player or a damn good manager. still, USA is an exciting side to sympathise with. would love to see Russia play USA in group stage

@samir: no dude, yopu are not the only 1,i too think usa can reach quaters this time, maybe not beyond.i mean we cannot forget the element of surprise,i mean who wud hve thouhgt that greeece would win the euro 2004, but they did,n i think usa has a better n more established squad than greece..so quater finals for this year maybe, ithinkthey will make it through the group stages, after that it depends on which team they face.. @dan.:we beat mexico a lot,its just this time that they won.
10.08.2009 09:35
@scott: u really think they will make it to the quater finals.? .i dont think they will even make ith through the group stage, i mean they can, but depends on which group they get, the world cup is all bou consistant performance.n 5-0 defeat to mexico in the gold cup, speaks for the in consistency in the team, yeah they are a decent enough side to challenge ny team, but in the world cup with the likes of germany, spain, brazil ,italy etc, their chances are slim..

Taona the USA team will be one of the fitest and best prepared there and only by playing the best teams will they test themselves . USA players feature in all major leagues but there coaches need development. But "soccer" is played on a pitch not a tactics board the world cup history is littered with so called giant killings England know more than most.

I'm English but look out for the USA as I lived there for a few years. The quality of the football at grassroots level is very good and they have thousands of good young players. The problem is that they lose interest when baseball, american football, basketball, etc. come along. The USA are a good team but they are not world beaters. The MLS, as much as I've loved going to the games, is not up to the standard of the leagues in England, Spain, Italy, etc. This needs to improve drastically. I would say that Dempsey is good, but Landon Donovan is a failure. He's tried playing in Europe on a few occasions and gone home with his tail between his legs - he's good in the MLS but that's because he has limited competition. I think that the USA should concentrate on qualifying before they can talk about anything else. Getting beaten 5-0 and 2-1 by Mexico is not the kind of form that will help you out in the World Cup.

A blind squirrell finds a nut once a while like the USA finds a win over Spain and a 2 nil lead over Brazil in the Confederations Cup.USA is definately a dark horse to make the final 8 of the world cup.If they achieve a quarterfinal spot in the world cup that would be like winning the world cup for them. The talent is not there like say for instance Germany,Italy,Spain,Brazil, etc, etc, etc.

Clearly the US team is becoming more competitive every year, but there are so many factors that impact a team during the season. I hpe to see them at least in the quarterfinals. As Lee says, first focus on qualifying, then we can talk about higher expectations. drjack <a href=” http://www.baltimore-computer-repair.net/”> baltimore computer repair </a>
